dual breaking system vs centrifugal?

Featured Replies

do any of you really notice a difference in a dual break system reel like the centrifugal and magnetic vs soley centrifugal.

im looking at a getting another curado but was just wondering howed it compare to a reel that has a dual breaking system like the pflueger patriarch or the revo stx.  Those are the other two im interested in.

Try the search function, there are lots of threads on this topic.

I have had the Patriarchs and I currently have a dual braking model STX.

Really, you aren't missing much by not using a dual braking reel.  They are pretty nice but after a couple seasons using them I have found that dual brakes are just not needed in a reel.  If a reel uses a high quality brake one way or another, its all (actually more than) you will ever need.  Those Curados with the VBS are just about the easiest casting reels I have ever used and if I were you, I would just grab another one of those.  Thats not saying that the Patriarchs and the Revos aren't great reels either.  I just wouldn't base buying a reel solely on its braking characteristics.

Its simple really, it allows an on the fly adjustment. Dont have to open the reel for changing conditions or bait changes. Fine tuning on the fly. Id have it no other way.

The only problem with that is, you can only adjust the magnetic brakes. Most people like use the centrifugals only, which you still have to open the side plate.

Mags and I believe Quantum's externally adjustable centrifugals are the only true "On the fly" adjustments.

(Except for of course spool tension, etc)

Are dual brakes necessary - no. Are they nice to have - yes.

You set your centrifugals for the weight of the bait. You have the magnetic for compensating for wind or fine-tuning the latter part of the cast. I also crank in more magnetic when my thumb starts going numb from the cold, when the arthritis starts to act up, and sometimes when I'm wearing gloves and lose some sensitivity.

Thumbs can, with time, become educated...but they sometimes get a bit stupid under difficult conditions and that's when a DBS reel may allow you a little more leeway before it's backlash city... ::)

Well then in my case Im not most people. I put the centrifugals to off, and only fine tune with the mags. Alot of times I wont use any braking at all, just a light flick and the bait goes flying.
