Help with rod choice.

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a good mid priced casting rod to be used mainly for fishing fluke style baits on 3/4 to 1/oz jig heads in the CA aqueduct for stripers. I currently have a 7'6" MH Vendetta, that while it does the job is a bit stiff and not as sensitive as I'd prefer.

These are a few of the rods I'm considering at this time, but am open to other suggestions.

Powell Endurance flipping rod 7'6" M Fast taper

Dobyns Savy casting rod SS704c or SS734C 7'3" H Fast taper

Dobyns Champion  series  704C  or 734C

Abu Garcia Verdict 7'3" MH Fast taper or 7' MH

Kistler Micro Magnesium  MicMgJTCR70 7' H

Kistler Micro Helium   MicHe70HC 7' H

or MicHe76HC  7'6" H

I have a Kistler 7'-0" Magnesium rod that I use for flukes. If you are looking for a sensitive rod then this would be your rod. MH power / fast action. I like the ones with the micro guides on them, you can cast your bait at farther distances and with the line laying on the rod, it makes it just that more sensitive. check em out - www.kistlerrods.com.

I have that same Dobyns rod and love it. If i remember correctly the 1oz jig is at the top of the range for this rod though. I may be wrong but worth a check, don't want to overstress a rod.
