Since both of these rods are rated for 1/4 - 1 oz lures and are both probably better suited for 1/2 oz and up, which one casts and handles the smaller weights better? In other words, 1/4 and 3/8 oz jigs and T-rigs.

I will be purchasing one or the other to be my primary jig rod and although I mainly fish 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 oz, I'd like to know how they handle the lighter stuff if I choose to throw them on it.

The 784 actually has a little faster tip than the 744. So if you were going to be throwing less than say a 1/2oz I would go the 744. I use the 784 for throwing football jigs and also c-rigs in deep water. The 744 is more an all around jig and t-rig rod. Jmo hope this helps in making your decision. Dobyns has pretty much taken over my rid arsenal. Out of the 18 rods I own 10 are dobyns.

Personally, I went with the dx744 and it is (imo) the best jig rod I have ever used on lakes.  I throw my jigs from 1/4-1oz on this rod model only.  I can't tell you enough good things about it. 

I can't tell you as much about the 784 ML as I don't actually own it, I have fished it a few times and it seemed a bit softer.  I know David P owned both and will probably be by to answer your comparison questions much better. 

As far as my recommendation it would be the 744 as I can't imagine a better rod for jigs, especially 3/8-3/4 as that's what I throw the majority of the time.

David P has given me excellent advice on Dobyns rod purchases on numerous occasions thru PM.  This time was no different.  He explained that he uses the 744 for the same range of baits that I intend to use it for.
