Storing Line...

Featured Replies

I need to get organized and I don't have much space to do it.  All my gear is organized into plano 3700 series boxes.  What's the best way to store line and keep it in great condition... I've heard of the coleman cooler ideas - but I don't have the space for that...any suggestions?  What works for you?  thanks in advance...

Dark, fresh, not too dry place does the trick of keeping your line good for many years.

Lines like fluoro and braided don 't suffer much from being exposed to UV light, ozone, too moist/too dry environments but copoly and nylon do, copoly suffers ? yup it does because it 's a mix of nylon and fluoro and the one suffering from adverse environmental conditions is the nylon part.

Nylon degrades when exposed to UV light

Nylon degrades when exposed to ozone

Nylon degrades when stored too dry

Nylon degrades when exposed to extremes in temp ( cold or warm )

So in that bag you have it protected against UV light exposure, but if you put the bag next or very close to let 's say an electrical outlet you 'll be exposing it to minute amounts of ozone, you store the bag in an non climatized garage then when the temps rise you 'll expose the line to extreme warmth and moisture in the summer and in the winter to freezing termperatures and dryness. Probably the worst place to store line is in the tackle storage compartments of your boat even if it is in the bag.

It 's not the bag, it 's where you are going to store the bag when you are not using it. A good place to store that bag would be, for example, in your closet when not in use.

i just leave my line in my tackle compartment on the boat, its worked so far.

Thanks, Raul!  Very good info.  What if I get one of those airtight/ waterproof utility box from Plano...that takes care of all that can damage, right?

Most of the damage that can happen can be minimized with an airtight box as you suggested, go for it.
