black max

Featured Replies

Im new to baitcasters and I just recently bought an abu garcia black max so i can learn how to use one but i read some reviews on it and some said they were terrible and others were said they were decent.ID like to get some other thoughts on this reel and to see if its a good beginner baitcaster

It's the reel I learned to fish a baitcaster on, and it was alright for that but if I could go back I probably would saved an extra 20-30 dollars and got a BPS Pro Qualifier.

My black max now sits collecting dust because it doesn't really work. If I spent a little more I could have a baitcaster I actually still use.

But for what you're going to use it for it'll be good, mine was.

I voted goob ;D...I learned on this reel too, and that was 3 yrs ago, it is still in use today although i have upgraded my stuff to Daiwa and PQ's. Its a great "learners tool" because baitcasters aren't for everyone and if you decide you don't like to use them, then you are not out much money.

goob haha thats funny i didnt realize i spelled  it like that and thank you for the quick replys i accualy find it easy to cast and what type of line is best for bait casters in your opinion

I use 12lp yo-zuri hybrid on most of my baitcasters. I've found that 12lp is a good middle of the road line cause it has plenty of strength for most applications, decent line diameter, and good castability.

The hybrid is a copolymer..Yo-zuri specifically states that its nylon(monofilament) inner is fused with fluorocarbon for greater abrasion resistance. This and most copoly lines will be categorized with monofilament because it resemble the characteristics of mono more than fluoro. As far as braid the only one i have used is the power pro 50# and only for flipping and pitching. I'm sure you can read some threads on here and get some different opinions.

Silver max was my first baitcast reel worked okay. TBH I'd just purchase a 100+ bait caster, as I'm sure you will want one anyway further down the road.  :)

what about braided lines, and what is the hybrid line made from

I'd stay away from braid for learning to use the baitcaster. I'd probably use 10 lb line for you starting out it's a little easier to cast and manage than 12 or larger.

the black max is a great reel to learn to cast with because the magtrax brakes work so well, especially compared to abu's more sophisticated "linear" magnetic brakes. in fact, i've taught two people to baitcast with a black max. and, man, it can really sling those lures out there. with 50 lb. test braid on mine, i can nearly spool it on every cast. it gets noisy and sloppy pretty quickly because of the graphite frame so i have it relegated to my catfish rods but it still makes a decent first reel.

thank you for all the info its been real helpfull now i just have to wait till ice breaks an i dont think it will come soon enoff seein how i was ice fishing on it 3 days ago

The one i had worked good for a cheap reel but lacked durability. It didn't last a whole fishing season.

I have had mine for a couple years now.  It works well I think.  Compared to my Revo's though, it just dosen;t "feel" as good in my hands.  It does work just as good as when it was new though.

My first BC was a piece of crap pflueger. Really cheap one. All of my stuff sees quite the abuse too. Wanna know the funny part? I've used if for 2 years now, and i still use it for smaller plastics.

I don't make much money and don't have a part time job. If i did, i wouldn't be able to go fishing where i go. My other 2 baitcasters are abu silver max's. All of my gear isn't great, but i catch fish. I'm picky with what the fish sees though. Everything else is cheap and rough looking.

My first baitcaster reel was abu garcia 1003 LP it was free my other cousin gave me it for free it work fine then and still have it just retired it this year still works but sometimes disengage the spool :'(  but i was look at a black max as a back up for my little cousin to use instead my expensive ones . The line i used was 12lb Berkley big game mono line in ( solar collector )  its easy to get out backlashes .
