2010 Revo STX-L HS.

I fish C-Rigs on my frogging setup, which has a Revo STX-HS on it. I personally think that on a Carolina Rig setup, the choice of reel is of very little importance compared to the choice of rod and line.

Yea, just about any reel will work for Carolina Rig BUT I wouldn't suggest a HS reel because you are normally working the rig VERY slow. But pay more attention to your rod.

The reason I say that is because I usually work the C-Rig with slow, sideways sweeps of the rod, same as with a football jig. I believe I can feel the terrain better that way, as opposed to dragging the bait with the reel. I worked a lot on the C-Rig last year because I hated it and had no confidence in it, and I caught more fish when moving the bait with the rod rather than the reel. I think that may have been because it forced me to move slower.

I prefer the high speed reel for carolina rigs because the leader can have several feet to move around. The fish can get a lot of slack in the line and when you set the hook you need to gather the slack from the rod tip to the weight and the slack between the weight and fish.

Personally, I have a Revo STX-HS.

I also like a high speed reel. You are feeling your way through cover with the rod held at 10 o'clock. When you get a bite, you have to reel down to get the line tight and set the hook. The faster the gearing, the faster you can do that.

As far as castability, that depends on what weight C-rig you throw. I almost always use 3/4 oz, so a reel with a heavy spool will actually cast farther than a one with a light spool designed for throwing light baits. I've used an Abu 4600C4 with 6.4 gears for a decade now. With minimal cast control applied, a hard cast spins up that heavy spool and it diesels out 20lb Fireline farther than any of the much more expensive Abus and Shimanos I use for other presentations.
