Leader to braid - swivel and clip to preserve leader?

Featured Replies

Hey All, I'm generally a straight braid guy, but I plan on experimenting with a flouro leader this year. Reading a bunch of posts here and I'm under the impression that most go directly from the braid to a flouro leader. This seems like it would be a real hassle when lures are being changed often, since I'd be losing a bit of the leader material every time I changed lures (no live baits).

So, do you use swivels (to tie the braid to the flouro) and a clip on the other end (for changing lures)? I can't imagine tying a new leader after every couple of lure changes. What's the general thought process when setting up your leader rig? I don't have the cash for multiple rigs, so I usually only go out with one or two setups and am changing lures often. Thanks in advance for your replies.

No swivel.  Unless you're using an excessive amount of line to tie your knots, anywhere from a 4 to 6 foot leader will last you for quite a while.  I personally use filler spools of fluoro mainline for my leader material and have never had a problem with it.  The cost is minimal when you consider how long that spool of line will last you.  The only rod I use a snap on is my cranking/spook rod.  I'll swap out cranks frequently, so a snap makes sense in that situation.  Otherwise, it takes all of a minute to tie a good line to lure knot.  You're not going to be loosing much fishing time if you need to swap lures out.

I use a swivel both fresh and saltwater and my leaders area bout 15-18".  In freshwater I mostly use a duolock and my leaders do not get changed all that often.  I just do not see any advantage to those long leaders for freshwater fishing, trying it has produced no more or less than my normal modus operandi.
