Drop Shot Leader Question?

Featured Replies

I have always drop shotted with about 15 yrds of main line or so of fluoro on top of mono. This next trip out i wanna use braid as my main line on my spinning gear.I was wondering if some of you guy's that drop shot with braid can give me some tips on how long a leader to braid length. Can i pre make leaders and just change them out? I already bought 25yrds of seaguar 6# leader material.I'm just looking for advise on Braid as main line, or should i just stick to useing fluoro on top of mono which has been working for years?

The length of the rod is fine.  I use 6-12' leader.

So basically, just like all my baitcasters. what about a swivle instead of the alberto knot?

Not going to be fun landing a fish on a 6-12' leash.  Skip the swivel.

Thanks Francho,I was thinking 3' leaders with swivle. I'm just over thinking this braid as main line on drop shot thing...

I would recommend against the swivel for a couple of reasons:

1) With a leader that long, the swivel will probably get dragged through the guides  when you near the end of retrieve or bringing in a fish.

2) Knots are the weakest point in the line. With a swivel you will have one more point of potential failure vs. two:

a) The standing (main line) to swivel

:D The swivel to the tag end

c) The end of the tag to the hook.

I would recommend going direct tie with the albright or other worthy knot..

Nah, if it gets that short, I'd retie with new leader anyway. Not enough fluoro to make a difference.

I'll add that I use this setup for shallow, light to moderate weeds, and in casting situations.  If its a just a deep drop or short pitches in deep (20'+) water, then use straight fluoro.
