Guide on Grand Lake, OK

Featured Replies

I have fished for white bass on the rivers above the dam, and have heard good things but no experience.  Good Luck Gorilla!

Without a doubt, I have to be in Okla in April.  I'll bring my boat turn a business trip into something more fun. :)

Ivan Martin is the only guide I know of on Grand. He's a good guy. But you may not need a guide to catch fish there. If your going to be on monkey island, your already close to some great areas. Mike McClellan proved that its a good jig lake, spinnerbait is also good in the spring. From monkey island if you go down lake it gets fairly clear, go up lake & it gets stained to muddy in the Elk. If you learn Honey creek, Elm branch, the Elk & Wolf creek, you'll be able to fish every kind of water there is, but not have to run from end to end. Watch out for the wakes of the big *** boats up there, they sometimes put off 4 ft rollers that dont break, they will catch you off guard. I know a guy that speared one and tore off his trolling motor. Your lucky to have access to a great lake like that.

Grand is a great warm water lake. When the water temps are 55 or over it is very good. There are some big boats esp. on summer weekends, but the lake is very good for bass and white bass fishing. Most of the time it is necessary to only fish the upper 15 feet of water, and do hit the numerous docks in summer as they are often the key anyhwere in the lake. Every weekend in warm weather has tournaments so watch what those guys are doing.  The bass usually spawn in April and by early May they begin to stage on the points esp, if water is running through the reservoir. The shade of docks is key for red shad worms and jigs.  Use at least 17 pound line around the docks' gnarly brush piles.  About one in ten docks will consistently hold bass, so it's a trial and error sort of thing.  Depth of the dock and position of dock i,e, point, main lake, cove, etc. kis also a factor. -Spinnerbaits along windy shores in warm water can be great in warmer waters, as can shallow and deep cranks. Lots of guys fish the willows when the water is hig enough to allow it, but  shallow Texas and C-rigs along the rocky banks, and drop offs can be good too. Grand is a very fertile lake with dark enough waters to allow most folks good angling opportunities.

I'm bringing this thread back to the top, because I will be visiting Grand Lake at the end of April.  I was going to use a guide for a half-day trip to get a feel for the lake and the seasonal pattern before I go out on my own.  I have found two guides that have over 15 years of guiding experience each on the lake.  Ivan Martin was already mentioned.  Tony Coatney also has over 15 years experience.  Both charge the same price for a half-day trip.  Can you Oklahoma guys tell me anything about these two guys?  Which one would you use?
