onthereel Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Heading there beginning of August for work (from DC area), but looking to maybe hit a spot or two when I get a chance. Any suggestions for ponds/lakes. Staying in the french quarter...not looking for more than a 1/2 hour drive one way. Thanks in advance for any help/tips you can provide. Quote
Bayou Bass Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 To be quite honest I would try some inshore saltwater. The speckled trout and redfish south of the big easy are unbelievable. Are you looking to go with a guide or are you bringing your boat? Quote

Lay-Z Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 City Park has some Bass and Catfish in the lagoons there. It's one of my usual fishing spots. You can also fish off the shore of Lake Pontchartrain for trout. Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 13, 2008 Super User Posted July 13, 2008 Audubon Park Lagoon. Take the St. Charles streetcar and exit by Toolame University and the entrance to Audubon Park. Bass, bream in the big pond. Or drive down St. Charles Avenue to the park's entrance and turn left into the park. I think you may need a license to fish the lagoon. Contact Fish With the King if you want to go saltwater fishing in the Biloxi Marsh. You will need a car to get to Shell Beach. But you said you did not want to go out with a guide so this is just for your informatoin. City Park Lagoons. Should be OK by now but they were hit hard by the flooding. Try by the Art Museum at the end of Esplanade Avenue and then the big lagoon in the park. Otherwise, I can't think of any places to walk to or drive from the French Quarter and there are no places to do any fishing around the French Quarter so please do not venture out of the French Quarter as it is not healthy. Anyway, you will be in the French Quarter. Are you sure you have fishing on your mind??? Quote
MARSH MASTER Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 He'll be on bourbon and will forget all about fishing.lol Quote
saint romain Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 i grew up in metarie and fished lafranere park (not sure how its spelled) but i'd ride my bike there and fish everyday after school. i'm not sure which exit but i know there's a best buy near it...im sure someone could give you clearer directions, but i just remember it being a fun pond to fish...its large and has many areas to fish...bass, perch, catfish, gar...lots to fish, and if you're not scared of looking like an idiot and just want to mess around like i did as a kid...fish the canals, ive seen some gigantic gar in there, and you'll catch a crowd if you snag a big one ...best of luck, city park was always fun too, used to fish it with my dad Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 22, 2008 Super User Posted July 22, 2008 La Freniere Park is off Interstate 10 past Clearview Parkway. Take I-10 from the Central Business District and head towards Baton Rouge. Exit at Clearview Parkway and stay right towards Lake Pontchartrain. At Veternas Highway, turn LEFT, go back under I-10, and look for Downes Boulevard on your left. Downes Boulevard will take you right into the park. At least it used to take you right into the park. If you are renting a car at Louis Armstrong International Airport you can exit the airport (do not speed) onto Airport Road and get onto Veterans Memorial Highway and look for the park and Downes Blvd. after you pass the Magnolia Shopping Center on your right. Get a map of Greater New Orleans that includes Metarie and you can find the park just before Kenner, where the airport is located. To go back to the French Quarter, take Vets Highway until you come upon an entrance back to I-10 towards New Orleans or get on Clearview going away from the lake and hit I-10 from that boulevard. Good luck and hope you don't get lost. ;D Quote

Super User Sam Posted July 22, 2008 Super User Posted July 22, 2008 Hometown: New Orleans, Louisiana Grew up fishing Audubon Park Lagoon and saltwater fishing. Still have family in NOLA and I try to make at least one LSU football game each season, although it is getting to be a hassel due to all the people on campus and I don't care for crowds. Also used to ride in Sparta during Mardi Gras, too. I just know the area although it has changed some over the years. Quote
bassinola Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 Been catching some decent 2-3 pound 12-13 inch bass in City Park. I found some spots most others don't know about. Get in touch with me and I'll point you in the right direction. Quote
