Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota

Featured Replies

Anyone fish on Lake Minnetonka?  If so, what are your thoughts on the lake and how have you been successful on it?  Most of my success has come in shallow areas and docks.  Just starting to look at offshore structure now that I have a depth finder.  I have fished the lake my whole life and I would like to hear your opinions on what I think is the best bass lake in the Midwest.  Looking forward to hearing anything you might have the say.  Thanks.

I can't answer your question, but was wondering what kind of cover that lake has?  Been thinking about a 3 dayer later this summer down by Excelsior.  Are you familiar with this area?  I would like to put in on the west or south end.  Thanks, Brian

Minnetonka's cover is largely weed based.  Milfoil is the weed of choice for bass in this lake.  It provides great cover but can grow out of control which makes it difficult to penetrate some areas in the heart of the summer.  Weed lines provide an opportunity to catch multiple species of fish.

I just recently purchased my first boat with a depth finder, so I am trying to find more rock based ledges which I know this lake has.  Minnetonka's chain of bays provide a wide range of cover conditions if you have the time to look.  If you do decide to come down let me know what you think and what seemed to work for you.  Thanks.  Hope this helped and if you have anymore questions, let me know.

Thanks for the heads up, sounds like what I was hoping to find.  I think Minnetonka is going to be a late summer trip and then on my way back going to hit the St Croix.

Anyone having luck on the lake so far?  Been catching small one in the shallows and some larger ones along the weedlines.

most my luck has been near shallow structures, but i have had descent luck on tonka with dropshotting.....try going out to about 10-15 feet depth and using this technique you might get a few

I actually thought about dropshotting as well.  Any luck with jigs so far?  I am new to the lake and thinking about tossing some heavy jigs around the weedline.

We usually have the most luck with size during the summer months on/near deeper water structure.  Rock piles, humps, and points usually produce some nicer fish.  Usually somewhere between 15-20 fow.  We usually fish these with deeper running cranks, carolina rigs, and jigs.

I have also caught a lot of nice fish punching through the milfoil with a heavy jig or a pegged creature/worm.  Just drop it in the foil, let it sit for a few seconds, and move to the next hole.

Weedlines can also produce some nice fish.  I like to crank parallel to the outside edge of weedlines in about 10-12 fow.

There are some nice fish in tonka, but it often takes some work to find them.  Especially with all the 40 foot yachts cruising 15 feet from you when you are working a hump/rock pile.  >:)

Well, I dropshotted last week for the first time and caught a nice pike.  I know a lot of guys detest them but I enjoy catching any fish.  I also caught a nice muskie last week on a topwater bait.  No bass, but I'll take the big fish.

I bought some heavy jigs to start throwing into the milfoil.  Do you guys just flip them and let them sit?
