Lake Fork Questions, Help

Featured Replies

My buddy and I want to make a trip to Lake Fork this spring.  I am wondering if it would be worth my time.  I only have a trolling motor (bass raider 8' boat) so I can't travel very far on the water.  I am really just wondering if it would be worth the drive (from Waco) for a days fishing?  Is there somewhere I can put the boat in that would allow me to access good fishing areas without traveling very far?  Any info on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Cliff

Absolutly there are lots of good places you could fish and expect quality fishing from a very small boat. I have been all over that lake and caught 3 bass over 9 pounds last spring and they were all within 100 yards of the ramp. Fishing Fork is all about location and presentation. The best catching I have seen on Fork was out of a 16 foot jonboat from an older husband and wife team.

My first choice would be to put in on Little Mustang at the Lighthouse Ramp. If we are there you could be my guest and put in on the East side of Williams for some great fishing. There are also many ramps on the other side of the lake by the Minnow Bucket but that is some big water for a small boat.

If there are any questions I can help with I will be happy to try. My wife and I have a place there and I am very familiar, just let me know.

Hey thanks for the info.  If you don't mind I will contact you again when the time gets closer.  Speaking of that, is there a certain time you would recommend?  We aren't looking to csatch ten pounders all day, just want to catch some quality bass.  Again I appreciate your help.

Thanks

I agree with BassChasser.  Little Mustang and Williams are both excellent places for a small boat.  Be sure to fish the area on the West side of the bridge that crosses Williams.  More than one ten pounder has been caught out of that area.

Thanks guys.  Is there anywhere online I can find a good map or directions to these spots?  I have never been to the area or anything.  I will be driving from Waco if that helps.

Thanks again

Cliff

Hi Cliff,

Here is a place to get some online topo map help.

http://www.angling-technologies.com

My prime time is March, April, and early May as that is when the heavy mommas are in the shallows. The biggest mistake I find is that most anglers fish the banks. That is fine for sight fishing for some buck bass guarding the nest but the fat sows are laying back against cover in 8 to 12 feet of water where a reaction bite will work. Be sure to have some watermelon red flake lizards, flukes, and jigs with baby brush hog trailers.

The other advice was right about the west side of the Bridge in Williams as I caught some of my nicest bass there last spring. Several up to 9 pounds. The south side of Williams has some very nice spots as well. Just let me know how I can help. I am NOT an expert but have learned quite a bit about fishing Fork over the years and get pretty lucky. I will be there March 30th for the full moon and be there for about 10 days, give me a shout as I normally have a seat open.
