CT River Stripers

Featured Replies

Gents, anyone know when they start comin' up the river?

The schoolies have been there for weeks. They should be gettin thick now or soon

The big ones aren't here till May or June

I go to the mouth of the Hockanum and Scantic and the Farmington near Barts

Fish from shore with 3/8 or 1/2 ounce swimbaits in ***'t colors with

3-4" bodies or sluggos --cut off 1-2 inches and use jig heads

Pink sluggos rock the river

The schoolies are in the 3-5 lb range now

Any more questions?

Suhweet! Thanks for the info. The only place I've really fished for them from shore is around Wethersfield Cove (10 mins from my house)...I assume I'll be able to nab a few there. But I'll have to try your area too. I wouldn't at all mind catching 3-5 pound schoolies to get the blood flowing.

I can meet you there to show you the ropes any night after 6.

Hock- park at magnet school

Scantic- park at the dirt spot or road at the farmers property--he lets us

Use light line to cast far

Pack a peace for the Hock. (you know why)

You will lose alot of lures too

I've heard Ct outfitters in Hartford is  good for striper info(I stick to LM/SM).   I saw on another site that they have a striper seminar coming up soon.

Cool, I might take you up on that sometime soon.  Have you been out there yet this year?  How many can you expect to catch in a night?

Oh, and I'm always strapped.

Not really, but the only gun I have is a 30-30 lever action.  It'll get the job done, but it's less than inconspicuous.

Thanks EdKras, I'll check it out.

For some reason when the sun goes down the schoolie stripers stop biting.

A great 3 hrs would yield 30 fish, an average would be 10

and a bad day 0-3

But you must be an expert caster to cast far sidearm under tree branches so your lure gets to the hole and then stop your lure before it hits the trees on the other side

Also not too many keepers are caught in these areas but its still fun
