The Nip, MA 4/12

Featured Replies

Finally caught some fish!  Borrowed a 14' canoe from my soon to be father in law and took it out onto lake Nippenicket in Bridgewater on saturday afternoon.  Was supposed to be really rainy but we ended up getting sunburnt!  The friend that I took with me was not at all familiar with being in a canoe...so I did a lot of paddling!

Anyways, at the recommendation of this guy who was pulling his boat out of the water thursday evening and saying that he caught a few bass, we went and picked up some shiners thinking that we would get some of those bass too.  Well, we got some good fish, but no bass in the boat.  Two decent sized pickerell, first was in the 16-18" range, maybe 2 lbs or so and the second one was closer to 20-22" and probably somewhere in the 2-3 lb range?  We didn't bring a camera because we thought it was going to be pouring.  At times it got pretty windy so I may have done more paddling than fishing, but it was fun.  I really need a bigger boat with a trolling motor to catch more fish!!

Take your canoe and paddle all the way up the right shoreline past the big island to the far right end corner where the stream is. Anchor out in front of the stream about 20 feet away and fan cast your shiners, black blue jigs, firetiger spinner bait and smoke or watermellon senko's towards the mouth of the stream  ;)

Which one do you mean by the "right" shore??  We launched from the WMA on the other side of the lake, not the paved boat launch.  The stream you're talking about is the outlet, right?  At the far northern tip of the lake.

I still have the boat on the roof of my jeep!  Thanx for the advice...I may try that this evening if I can!

This weekend we pretty much stayed around the big island.  Kept paddling south of the island and letting the wind push us past it.  Was trying to hit the deeper water east of the big island, but got all of our action on the west and southwest side of the island??!

Yes the outlet in the north end. Water temp will be warmer there ;) Also try black/blue spider grubs. This is a killer spot in spring :)

d**n, those are some SPECIFIC recommendations!!!  I can't get out today......but I'm gonna get out there ASAP!!  Is that your sketch or did you find it somewhere??  I work like two seconds from the Nip...  I take it you go there often?

Thanx again!!

One more Q.  You say water should be warmer near the outlet...how does that make sense?  Because it's the northern part of the lake and it gets more sun??  I know there are supposedly a few inlets but they're barely noticeable and as far as I can tell don't have much flow.    I've tried fishing near them, hoping for warmer waters, with no luck.

Just don't fish that spot in October....You'd be casting in my decoy spread... ;)

thanx, I'll keep that in mind!!

Do you ever hunt over in the WMA by where the duck hunting place used to be?  I fish from the shore over there pretty frequently(and of course wear blaze in season).  Not so much because it's a good fishing spot, more just to ditch outa work for a while and get away!

The area your talking about is the black mallard club.I hunt at the outlet, the area bassectomy is talking about in his pic.Good fishing.

Water will be warmer due to the shalow depth, not becuase of the current. Current makes for a great ambush spot on that bush. Don't hesitate to cast further up into stream as well. Got 3 LM over 4lbs on three cast last year around this time on a top water Rago rat(Original jointed version) But also do well with jigs so your shiners should do the job. Just drew that scetch for you! ;) Here are some my favorite spots :-X not all some. Arrows indicate where to fish,Good luck!

The best way to fish the nip is to stay away during the daylight hours.Get there after 8:00 pm and fish till mourning.Throw a buzzbait or do as I do and Throw a rago rat ,ever so slowly on the surface. There are some giant fish there, and fishing during the day is a really hard time to find them, due to the super shallow water. At night is when they come out and play.So good luck and be safe, dont fish alone after dark.
