tips on using a jig on fairly open water

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am planning a trip in 3 weeks to Lake of the Ozarks.  I assume the bass will be pre spawn.

I do not have much experience using a jig but would like to try.  I don't plan on doing any pitching into heavy cover.

Do I fish the jig like I would a worm?  Any tips are appreciated.

Thanks

Larry

In open water, I've had luck repeatedly hopping the jig fairly high and letting it sink back down.  The fish usually hit when the jig starts to fall.  Hope that helps!

I was down at the LOZ this week fishing jerkbaits. A tourney this week was won using a jig. In a couple of weeks the jig bite should be strong. I typically use a small 1/4oz jig with a chompers twin tail grub as a trailer. Just work the jig slowly around chunk rock and you should pick up a fish or two. Dragging it and let it sit works too.

If you are going on the last weekend of March you might want to bring a few spinnerbaits along. ;) Carolina rig lizard should start to come into play as well. If the water temperature reaches 55 then the entire tackle box will come into play. I will heading down the weekend of the March 20th. Hopefully, I can pick up a few fish.

i dont usually fish open, do you mean no rocks or anyting?

if your not imitating a crawfish you could go for a baitfish profile..

maybe swim it? if the water is cold i would grab a long tail-style hair jig (or buckeye jig) and fish it like a dying shad or minnow

just going on what i heard, i wish i had open water during the summer when the weeds take over ALL of my lakes.....but hey, cover is good, right?
