New to Hula Grubs. Flippin sound like a good idea?

Featured Replies

O.k. so I bought some Yamamoto 5' hula grubs. Using a football head would be stupid for me because I live in Florida. I stripped down a half ounce Boo Jig (flippin weed cutting design) and am wondering if these are a good bait to fish up and down.

Oh yeah, are these a good casting lure to drag either with a weedless jig, or T-rigged?

I most often rig them on a football or other stand-up jig head, but as you mentioned I'm fishing open water without any vegetation or other cover.

I have had good luck a couple times with a hula grub t-rigged and dragged/hopped back to the boat.

I've only ever fished them Trigged, work good for me.  I guess I should try them on a jighead soon too

I honestly believe you couldn't fish them wrong if you tried to. They were my No. 1 confidence bait a few years ago. I think you could catch a fish out of a mudhole with one. :o

I have fished them both ways, T-rigged and on a jig.  Killer bulk for a slow falling finesse jig. ;)

like'em t-rigged best, they are a nice bait.

I tried the Falt Albert Zoom Grubs a few weeks back.    Got lots of hits, problem was the way I rigged it.

I Texas rigged the bait on straight shank, my first three good bites, 2 of them  ended up with the fat of the bait balled up in the Jay part of the hook with no penatration.

I'm trying them again this weekend with a jig head approach.

Good luck and let me know how you rigged yours.     I like the down size that this bait allows me to do when the temp dropped.

I like to c-rig them.

Thats interesting. I've been on a C-rig craze recently, trying to get better with it. I have also been looking for a good lure to use with it. How does the hula rig stay up when you C-rig it? Do you just drag it and not worry whether or not its just dragging in the mud?

most crawfish travel on the bottom anyway. my fave c-rig lure is a senko or beaver style lure. esp the beast

When you guys are t-rigging them, are you pegging them? or letting the bullet weight free slide?

I would tell you to peg it when fishing heavy cover, but let it slide with a glass bead when trying to attract them in murky water. Personally, I don't even peg I just buy perfect worm rig hooks. And I have never T-rigged one of these hula grubs. I took apart a Booyah Boo-jig and used it for the hula grub. It's a flipping jig design so it kept the weeds off pretty well. I was fishing from shore and wasn't really flipping, I was just casting. You should try this out.

Oh yeah, I know. I use them for a jig trailer all the time, along with on a jighead as a spider jig, just wanted to know how the people are rigging them when t-rigged.

They will work just about any way but I love to hop them around rocky and brushy rip rap on a football jig with a weedguard. Both largies and smallies love em.
