questions about fishing lily pads

Featured Replies

there is a spot in RI i fish from the bank where there is alot of lily pads and grass right at the surface with some clear wholes also. i was just wondering what time of day is good to fish in lily pads because they provide shelter from the sun for the fish so would it be better to go mid day rather than at 6 or 7 in the morning when the sun is just rising? and any tips on how to fish this?

thank you

I'd bet early mornings, later evenings and mid afternoon for the pads.  They will be on the edges in the AM and PM, and directly under them during the heat ofthe day if there is no deeper water to go to.

Personally I have a real hard time fishing them in the middle of the day. I like to throw topwaters along the edge at sunset. I usually try deeper when the sun is high.

Throw some topwater baits all over that area. I've even had my bait land on top of pads, then have a bass go for them and smack them into the water. If that happens, let it sit (or give it some SMALL twitches) and that bass is going to come back and destroy that lure!

I agree with what has already been said. Morning and evening are you best times to fish them, but they could be hitting topwater ALL day.

I wouldn't rule out any time of day for lily pads. In addition to topwaters, try dragging a soft plastic across the pads, letting it sink into the holes and at the edges.
