Winter fishing in Northern Jersey

Featured Replies

Are there any rivers that are good fishing in the winter around the Morris county area for bass or maybe even trout?

Dig a hole in the ice... We do better ice fishing by far than we do in the summer.  Especially if you find a lake with nice pickerel.  Nothing beats pulling out a fiesty pickerel out by hand.  Bass fishing in winter is a waste of time in my opinion, they don't really move too much.  You can dangle a tasty treat right in front of their nose and there's still a good chance you won't get it.  In winter, I'm going to perch or pickerel, both stay very active under the ice.  We caught some decent bass last winter, but I'd take a small fiesty pickerel over a big, sluggish bass that doesn't fight at all.

I agree that ice fishing for bass can be tough. They can be caught, but other fish are better in the winter and put up a better fight.

Bassinator- where are you in Morris Co.?  There is some good pike fishing in the Passaic river.

Most rivers stay open, at least partially. Rockaway, Ramapo, Pequannock.  Not much in the way of bass other than the occasional smallie, but there are trout to be had.
