Lower Ohio River area

Featured Replies

I live in the lower Ohio river valley near Evansville IN. No one bass fishes the Ohio or Green River around here. Anyone know if it is worth the effort? Are they to muddy?? Like I said no one around here fishes them for bass, but no one can say why either.. What about the sloughs after backwater from the river gets in?? Crappie move in if the timing is right.

You might be missing some good fishing but you'll never know unless you get out there. The backwater should produce in the spring and definately look for grass in the summer.

Thanks Grey Wolf,

The main river here is over 1/2 mile wide and I've never seen any vegetation in it. It is like the Mississippi river. I might try some of the sloughs after the water comes up and goes back down to see if anything gets trapped. I own a piece of property that has a 7 acre cypress slough. I will see large gar and drum but I have only caught 2 catfish that weighed about 2 pounds each. I think it would be a perfect fishing hole but it is to shallow and gets very hot during the summer. I do not think much survives the summer months. I also have never seen and dead fish other than gar in it.?? I was more wondering "If" largemouth/smallmouth were even in this part of the Ohio.

Wow no grass beds in your area , that sucks.

I have fished several tournaments over the years from Ashland, Ky to Paducah.  Fish Rip Rap, boat docks, harbors, laydowns, and the streams that run into the river.  Did well with crankbaits, jigs, plastics, spinnerbaits, poppers, and buzzbaits.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Ever catch any big 3+lbs bass out of the river near southern IL. I'll be fishing around Henderson KY, Evansville IN.
