Success on Saturday evening

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

had 3 hours yesterday, so i went out. I ended up having a banner day as far as I'm concerned. I landed 17. Two fish were 3lbs or better, three fish over 2lbs and the rest were 1.5lb or below. I also caught some very big shellcrackers, and I did miss some other fish. All in all a great day.

All fish were caught using Mepps Lures ;)

Nice job Mepps.  Not a bad day at all!  I wish I had landed some of the ones I hooked into yesterday at the ponds we hit.  One was definately close to my pb if not better.  When it jumped out of the water it did a 360 flip lol.  It was crazy, threw my hook way out.

Anyway, looks like alot of these ponds are seeing the grass grow back pretty thick, I can see some in your pics there too.  What are you doing next weekend?  We are either hitting the Rap for smallie wadng (water level permitting) or hitting more ponds we found over the weekend.  Pm me and let me know if you got time or are interested.  Later dude.

Good job with the old timer lure haha!  Good to see some people still actually fish old school and have success.  I need to try mine sometime and see if I can't get some bass on it.

Nice looking fish.  Always good to see someone pulling out decent fish with the good ole Mepps.

By the way, Black Fury dressed #3 is my favorite.   :)

Very impressive!  I'll have to look into those Mepps lures.  Finding a better fishing spot might help too. :)

Hey guys, thanks for the comments. :)

Oh yea, AnglerNFuego, the #3 Black Fury is one of my all time fav's also.

I love Mepps.  I was killing the biggest Rock Bass I've ever seen all day long in upstate NY on a black fury last June.  Any red eyes this far south?

I used to catch a ton of rock bass on the Shenandoah years back, but I've never caught any in this immediate area.

Nice catches Kevin! I didn't have too much luck Saturday, the water was chocolate milk.

Mepps, nice post and fish to boot....You'll have to show me the ways of these lures.

flippin4it, Mepps #3 was the 1st lure I used when I started fishing for Bass, more than 30 :oyrs ago. They are as adaptable as regular spinnerbait. A regular straight-in retrieve, straight-in with twitches, yo-yoing it in or what's really fun (low light like late evening) retrieve it fast enough to ride just below the surface and cause a bulge in the water! GREAT strikes that way ;)...

That how more than half of my strikes occur! Usually happens in the first few feet of retrieve. Thanks for letting the cat out Skillet...jk :D

it's basically just an inline rooster tail spinnerbait is it not? i bet you catch tons of bluegill and crappie as well...

how bout posting a picture of the lure you're talking about, i'm not certain :-/

Yup, thats all it is man. I dont have any pics right now, but you can check thier site for pics, details, buying them and so on. You know, i do catch some nice big bluegill, shellcrackers, and crappie. If I find I'm catching too many, i usually switch up to a #4.

I grew up fishing Mepps spinners for smallmouth and Northern Pike in upstate NY. One of my most productive lures. Pike in particular love big inline spinners.

Nice fish Mepps!

Didn't really know any Bass fishermen back then and figured out the thing with retrieving it just below the surface when I was in a hurry to get home for supper and accidently was reeling FAST :o. You ought to try that with a Zebco 33 and a Lew's Speed Stick. Geared so low :P, it will wear you out in short while ;D. It's strange, what Mepps #3 said about going to #4 for larger fish. I don't find that a #4 works as well as #3 and they don't seem to work as well (for me :() in large bodies of water as ponds or small lakes. Always just used brown or white bucktails, gonna have to try those Black Furies, THANKS ;)...

Nice fish Mepps!

Thanks man. have you gotten out lately? How you feeling bro?

Skillet, I as well kinda learned by having to hurry up in my last few casts of the day. Once I found that out, I've just honed in on that technique and now all i really use are these lures. (and some others of course!)

I had the same issue with #4's in the past. For some reason, lately they've been working. Not sure whats up with that. I always, always use the dressed versions though. Never even tried a non-dressed one. The black fury #3 is without question is one of the most productive.

Nice fish Mepps!

Much better, Thanks for asking. I got out yesterday, caught 4 or 5.. let two nice ones go. Carried the camera with me all day to find out my g/f snagged the batteries.  >:( Oh well, theres always next week.

I'm just not into it :-/, i feel like anyone can catch fish that way, I feel more successfull when I know my presentation was on point, like with a fluke or a tube, jmho, not trying to take anything away from anyone. :P

I hear ya Trev, just don't think i'm "disgracing" a fish when i catch them.  ;)

Takes skill to catch a bass no matter what you are throwing (as long as it's artificial).  There is always luck involved no matter what anyone says but the skilled angler who has the right kind of line, rod, reel, bait for the given situation and has learned how to properly set the hook, fight the fish, etc.  That person will always catch more than the unlearned guy.

Fishermen have been catching on Mepps for decades now.  I don't see any credibility issues using this lure.  If it works for you use it as your confidence, go to bait.

I guess you could say the same thing about the senko too, but thousands of bass fishermen still use it cause it's a reliable tool for their arsenal.

Mepps, I say use what works for you and don't worry about what others think about your baits.  If you are catching fish that is all that matters.

That was some killer advise, but I was kidding. ;)    My grandfather was a Mepps kinda guy.

Hey, fellas, I wasn't saying anything was wrong with it at all, I was just replying to what we were talking about after he explained what it is exactly, I simply just said I'm not into it, not my thing, because I personally don' find it challenging for bass fishing for ME, I wasn't saying anything bad about the lure or anyone that uses it, to each his own, I'll throw a baby panther martin all day long for trout, beats powerbait and corn...

Mepps, it's a quote from one of my favorite movies, don't take it personal man
