Wake Crankbaits ? When ?

Featured Replies

Just got a new Rick Clunn Wake from LC... it's like the next RC in two segments.

It's basically a wake topwater crankbait .... and I gotta say I don't use these cranks much ...

I use a lot of shallow running cranks, but I can't seem to use a topwater crank like this one or the Mann's Waker. :-?

When fishing topwater (slop apart) I tend to rely on poppers, stickbaits, propbaits and buzzbaits.

I understand those wakers are made for steady retrieve. So when do you favor a wake crankbaits over a buzzbait ? To me, I don't see much difference between the two in therm of action (ok the crankbait you can kill it and it will stop and floats ... but if I want to be able to do so, I usually switch to a prop-bait !

Waiting for your advice on how to fish those topwater cranks .... or they will just stay dry in the box for another year. :( Thanks !

For all the LC fans, here's a picture below so you can see what it looks like.

As soon as bass get in shallow water, I'll start throwing the super shallow crankbaits.  They work great around shallow flooded wood and over grass beds.

around laydowns and grassbeds when the bass are shallow those baits are killer. i love shallow cranks and wake baits. spring time is prime time for those.

i used them alot last season with mimimal success   the best times i caught them was when the shad was very active just before dark    i used the strike king king shad

i love wake baits. whenever the bass are up shallow and around cover i will just throw these and crank em right into the cover. deadly!

Last year, like everyone else, water levels were really low where I fish, and I was killing them on wake baits.  I was using the Bulgin B2, and a Bandit footloose... I'm almost hoping for another drought this year...

Well, thank y'all !

I guess I will have to do my best to cast them this year.

Funny, cause all the conditions you mentioned are the ones which would make it thrown a buzzbait ... and normally if the buzzbait fails to produce, I'd usually switch to a stickbait with a more subtile natural profile, and allowing me the possibility to pause the bait.

Well, I may be able to find a slot for this wake type crankbaits between the buzz and the sammy. I'll try  :(

Thanks  8-)

When a buzzbait stops working I switch to a Mann's 1- and wake it right below the surface.  Because it is not as noisy but still creates a large profile with the wake, it really works on aggressive bass.  A lot of times after one or two fish on a buzzbait the fish get the clue and ignore it or leave altogether, a wake bait is a lot more natural and is deadly overtop of thick vegetation in the summertime.

you can use them a whole lot slower then a buzzbait too. i use them alot during the bream spawn and wake them around docks. they work great. the only key is shallow water.

don't forget the storm subwart.

of all the ones i use, the subwart just seems to produce when others don't.
