Lake Maury, Newport News Va

Featured Replies

Has anyone fished this lake?  I'm lived in Portsmouth all my life and know a great deal about all the suffolk lakes, but I never hear much about this lake.  I'm very interested in fishing it.  Does anyone have any experience here?  Thanks!

I sent you a PM, but for the benefit of everyone else...

Lake Maury is owned by Mariners Museum. Due to budget cuts, the lake was closed for several years. There were no boats, not even rentals, allowed on the water. The only fishing allowed was near the boat rental house.

Only in the last year or so has the museum started renting boats again. So now people can get back out on the water.

My understanding is that the lake is very healthy and is producing some big bass. I haven't fished in since before it closed. But I will this season - hopefully. I'm betting it is a killer lake.

A friend fished Lake Muray two weeks ago.

He caught one and the two guys that were fishing with him caught some very nice, healthy bass.

He said they were 3 and 4 pounds, but knowing him and his math, they were probably smaller. But nice bass, nonetheless.

So give it a try and let us know what you think.

He brings his own trolling motor and battery to the lake.  :)

I went there yesterday to try it out, and it was interesting to say the least.  I was told the average depth of the lake is between 6 - 8 ft, with the deepest spot around 16 - 18.  Heard it was stocked with bass, bluegill, shellcracker, pike, white and yellow perch, and crappie, along with catfish.  Anyway the weather wasn't my friend and a cold front came through, which just shut the fish down.  I did manage to get 6 bass though, 4 small, and 2 about 2 lbs.  All the bass were caught on either a spinnerbait or crankbait.  I thought a senko would be the ticket, but never got a bit on it.  The lake looks awesome, lotsa fallen trees, rocks, points, wooden bridges, etc  I'd love to get a depth finder in there.  Heard from a few of the regulars that usually you can get a bass of 3 -4 lbs a trip, and every bass over that weight looks like footballs.  Everyone agrees that there is way to many shad in the lake, but VDGIF are discussing the stocking of hybrid stripers, boy that would be fun.

I havent fished lake maury this year and i havent had much luck there in the past but i want to go this weekend...can you give me some pointers, Like what crank baits did you use, did you have any luck with platics, is there any particular spots that produced well for you.  I just want to have a good time and i just wanted to know if you had any tips?

I tried soft plastics, throwing a texas rigged lizard into wood, and a senko to the same.  The senko was ok, it caught some fish, all small.  The lizard I never had a bite on.  The crankbait was a No 5 Shad Rap, the Spinnerbait was a 1/4 oz homemade spinnerbait, with a chartreuse/white skirt.  Next time I'll crank the whole time, especially every bit of wood I see.  As to where to go, I didn't have any spots really I just fished it all.  I've heard though that a good number of big bass are by the dam.
