Rivers Rest, Chickahominy River

Featured Replies

Anyone put in at Rivers Rest recently? I plan on going down there Saturday morning and im new to that part of the river, where has the best fishing been at for you?  What are some producing lures? I hope to be on the water by 5:45 so I can catch that morning topwater bite  ;). Any advice is appreciated!

You can fish the length of the cut-through, especially at the opposite end by the Cyprus tree and duck blind.

Fish the pads upriver towards Rock-A-Hock, throwing into the pads with your trick worms and other "pads" baits.

Fish parallel to the pads with a lipless crankbait or swimbait.

Big tournament out of Route 5 bridge on Saturday so go early and head upriver fast.

Check out the tides so you can go upriver and follow the tide towards the James as it goes out.

You may want to hit the creeks, too.  Fish the wood and docks.

I will be out there with my bass club so if you see a guy in a Tracker, with a blue and white umbrella above the front seat, it is me.  Tell me where the bass are, OK???????  ;D   ;D   ;D

Good luck.

P.S.  Get a GMCO map of the Chick before you go out.

Be careful as the loonies in the jet skis and the pontoon boats, plus the big ocean yachts, will be all around the river after 11 AM and into the afternoon.

Lots of waves so hold on and wear your PFD at all times.

You can fish the dam, but I have never had any luck at the dam. The pads and docks are where they should be, but I am not a bass so who knows what is going on with them.  ;)

And there is a big music festival at Rockahoc this weekend, so there will be plenty of people on the water - most of whom you may not want to be near.

Try the mouth of the fish ladders at the dam.  Billions of little baitfish move through there.  Got any Silver Buddies?   Jigging them near the fish ladder migh be productive.

I put in at Morris Creek this past Sunday, absolutely no luck with all my usual baits. My wife even showed me up with a a nightcrawler and caught a catfish (first fish she ever caught).

My first time out there, though, and thought the place was pretty awesome as far as the scenery goes, so I'm definitely interested in trying some more.

Found a really deep ledge as you exit Morris Creek and head upriver(which I'm sure everyone knows...got up to 60+ feet in areas). This a good spot for catfish? Pretty sure I'm gonna change tactics and try that out until I get to know the area better.

Oh...and kept seeing some large splashes all around, stripers?

The large splashes you are seeing are most likely gar.  The river is filled with gar.  Sometimes they will blow up right next to your boat and scare the hell out of you.  All you will see is a big, spotted tail diving back down.

That ledge you are talking about sounds like the edge of the channel.  Yes, any of the deep spots are good for big catfish.  However, right now, there are a lot of decent, frying-size, blue and channel cats in the shallows and they will readily hit moving baits.

Next time you go to Morris Creek, think "hard structure."  By far, I catch more big fish on hard structure than I do in the grass and up next to the weeds.

And there is very little difference between spring, summer and fall

when it comes to where the fish are.  Spring and fall are the best time on Morris Creek.  IMO, summer is tough.  Winter is tough, too, but the bast are easy to find if you can find the balls of baitfish.

Can you tell me exactly where the Route 5 bridge is? I am new to this area and have never been there.. Thanks.
