Petition for Lake Guntersville

Featured Replies

Anybody have any thoughts on the petition for lowering creel and possession limits on Lake Guntersville?

I am not sure how they are going to enforce tournament mortality rates, but I am sure they will think of something.

I am for it.

I didn't know the creel limit was 10 until Troy Jens brought it to my attention (always fishing a tournament, we do a 6 fish limit for buddy tournaments).  Everywhere I fish around here has a 5 fish limit.

IMO decreasing the daily limit to 5 would be a step in the right direction.

I don't know about Guntersville, but Wilson and Pickwick have and abundance of 10 to 14 inch bass. If folks would eat some of the smaller bass, I think it would be good for the fishery. Also, I don't think tournaments kill that many fish. At least from what I have seen.

Just from what I have seen there going to a five fish limit may hurt the lake more than it helps. The guys fishing for meat may be doing a service to all that fish that lake for all I know. I don't think it's good for someone to take a 10 fish between four and eight pounds from the lake. But most fishermen taking fish probably aren't doing that and removing the small fish may be what has helped make that lake what it is. I think tournaments hurt the population of larger fish on most lakes and may do way more damage than anyone fishing for meat. Enforcement is a big problem also. Here in GA I fished way over 250 days last year on around fifteen different lakes and saw a game warden only once. My buddies say it's much the same way in  Alabama.

I have had my fishing license checked twice in the last 3 months. By a water patrol officer.  I have yet to see a game warden this year.
