Albemarle county fishing, VA

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm new to fishing the Albemarle area, and was wondering if anyone had any advice on shore fishing the county parks. So far I've been fishing Chris Greene and Walnut Creek, but will try the Rivanna River and Mint Springs at some point.  Are there any lures or colors that work particularly well in these?

-Thanks,

Nern

Check with Wayne P.

He is our resident expert on the Charlottesville area and a very nice guy.  :)

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction :)

I have been to the Rivanna Res. several times this year and enjoyed it every time I have been. Bluegill patterned crankbaits, chartreuse colored spinnerbaits, and watermelon red flake Rage Tail craws have been my best lures. Fishing in or somewhere near downed trees is where I have found most of the fish that I have caught. Another lake that I like to fish in that area is Lake Albemarle. The only problem is that you need a boat to fish most of the place. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Decent shore fishing at the Rivanna Res. is non existant. For a nice hike with fishing thrown in, try the Ragged Mt. Resevoir on the Southwest side of town. There are some very large bass there.

Chris Green, Walnut Creek, and Beaver Creek have the best shore access.

This time of year, soft pastics rigged your favorite way will produce the best.

Thanks Guys!

I will have to check out Ragged Mt soon. Who doesn't like a good hike?

I've been fishing Chris Green lately, with bad luck by the fishing pier, and decent luck off that point by the dam. So far everything has been small, but I saw a guy carry away a monster so I know they are in there.

nern, a few years age I caught a 9# one day and a 10-6 the following day at Chris Green. Both of them were in the cove where the umbrella shaped water sprayer is.

At Chris Green, walk around the hiking trail from dam parking lot to the end of the cove on the park entrance side of the lake. There is a large beaver hut that attracts bass and crappie and several downed trees along that shoreline close to the trail.

The point at the dam next to the cement tower is a good location if you cast out to the 10' depth towards the beach. You have to get to the outside edge of the submerged weeds.

You will just love that hill at Ragged Mt. on a hot day. I usually walk around the whole lower lake. I'm too old and feeble to fool with taking a boat there anymore.

Thanks! I really appreciate the help. Hopefully I'll get a chance to try these spots soon.

Also, I'm not sure if you can call yourself old and feeble if you are hoofing it around hiking trails looking for fish to fight with ;)
