NOVA area fishing reports

Featured Replies

We havent had too many fishing reports lately.....anyone been succesful in the heat?

I havent been out in a few weeks but planning on going this weekend.

Occoquan River is where its at right now. Been slaying them all last month and this month, atleast 7 keepers a day and lots of 12-15"ers. Jigs, Flukes, Spinners, and lots on plastics. And when you get too hot just jump in swim around and then get back to fishing.

Good Luck to ya'

Where you launching for the Occoquan River bigbass..... I have been really interested in trying it out, but thought I saw a launch fee for the place I found online to launch from.

Burke was not happening last night, I'm posting about it in the Burke Lake thread

The best public access is from the ramp at Occoquan Regional Park off of 123/Ox road.

part of me wants to keep trying Burke just because its a challenge to catch anything there.

I mostly fish Beaverdam Creek Reservoir since it's close by.  Last weekend I caught this 17" smallie during the late morning. Unless my scale is acting up it only weighed 2lbs despite being about the same size as the fatty in my avatar.

Well, it's definitely been rough, but there's been mild success on Carolina worms here around Culpeper.  One that I pulled in myself, and a guy near me who's been pulling in some nice ones.

BBH, has any of your success on the Occoquan come from areas accessible from shore?  I'm stuck with dry feet, so to speak.

all along the park banks have decent laydowns. down by the batting cages decent drop about 20 yards of shore from 3-4' down to 16-20'. then you could crig off the fishing pier down where the crew boats are stored, theres nice grass line and quickly drops into the channel.

Caught 6 today @ fountainhead between 6am and 9am.  All between 14-16 inches.

Thanks mudd on the launch tip.  Might get there this week.

Here was the nicest of the lot from my trip to Pohick bay last week.  Water was real warm, I went at low tide, so the weeds were like salad..... had to pull up the trolling motor and row.

Didn't weigh him, but slammed a tiny torpedo.  Was a really nice, clean fish.  Will be back in the bay sometime this week too, (with new booyah jigs) preferably with a higher tide so the weeds are not to bad.

One of those days for me this morning.....lost 3 jigs and only 1 bite.  She did an arial display and shook the hook off.

The best times to fish the tidal rivers is to wait for outgoing tide. With all the weeeds growing so heavy, as the tide falls the fish come to the edges to follow bait out of the weeds. use some electronics to stay right outside of the weed line and toss you lure right inside and slowly work back to the boat.

On another note, went to fountain head yesterday and had 4 over 3lbs and 1 over 4lbs, all came from plastic worked deep 18-25ft(shaky heads, jig, and texas rig fluke). Water was just below 90f from bull run to the dam. Saw some tourney guys swimming to retreat from the heat.

If you gave me a choice of when to fish the river in the summer I would choose low tide. It's generally easier to find fish because they don't have as many places to go. That matted grass is dynamite for bass and snakeheads throughout the summer. Throw hollow bodied frogs over top of it.

What tourney was on friday/saturday???

Like that school of thought Dan.  Will give it some effort when I try Pohick again later on this week or next week. The grass at low tide seemed SOOOOOO thick that a fish could barely move through it.  I also struggled to get really far back in there with the lilly pads due to the weeds.

I do love some froging though..... so will bust out both the hollow real looking frog from snagproof lures and the new solid bodies I got with some paddle tails.... can't remember the company name.  The legs stir up some action, but that snagproof frog with normal frog legs (not the skirts) really killed em for me in NY with such clear water.

You have a preference in your frog choices?

No tourney, just a couple guys out there I guess practicing, they kept talking about "wish we could catch fish like this during the tournements". And they where on fully decked out jons with 9.9s and cooler livewells.

I like Spro Bronzeye frogs for hollow bodies and Rage Toads for buzzfrogs.

ah ok. yea that always happens. we catch more prefishing than in the actual tourney. what can you do? Happened to me this week. Me and a buddy got on a nice pattern and come Sunday the pattern is gone...

Went out for a few hours this AM @ fountainhead

IMG_2539.JPG

Went to the Pohick Bay on the Potomac yesterday for the whole afternoon (11am to 5 pm).  Just a few small ones that were aggressive.  The water was crystal clear and warmer then I expected, not as warm as Burke or even close, but still rather warm.

Water temp made the fish real lethargic... I know because as I was drifting in the current I saw a bunch of 2 and 3 lb looking fish..... and they would not take a thing.  I even literally hit one in the face with my Carolina rigged senko .....Saw him in the water holding, reeled my lure in nice and slow...right to his waiting mouth.... and bumb...right off his face.

I also pounded the pads with frogs (hallow and solid) with no luck..... not even a snakehead.
