New River Va

Featured Replies

Hi,

I live in blacksburg, Va and have fished the New River several times for smallmouth bass.  I have  mostly gone to an area just down the river from Whitethorne.  Does anyone know any other spots with decent fishing?  I have been trying to go down to Eggleston and check that area out.

Thanks

josh

Down by big falls (the area you are talking about down from whitethorne) is a great place to fish!!  There are a ton of wadeable spots that you can find above and below the falls.  I have spent most of my time fishing there on the new river.  I wouldnt suggest it, but I have waded at whitethorne once and caught a few nice smallmouth.  It pretty difficult to get to a wadeable area and not really worth the effort.  You can reach a spot on down the river where you can park underneath a bridge but im not familiar with the location completely.

As far as eggleston goes, if you do not have a boat it can be difficult.  however there are some wadeable areas around the bridge and upstream from there.

My biggest advice is to just explore and find spots for yourself.  Just drive along the river and if you see a good spot, stop and fish it.  If its no good, just move on!

No better way to spend a summer day  :)

I dont have a VT in my screename, but I graduated from VT in 2003 and fished down there a lot! Specifially at MCoy, is that still avaible?  Got some good ones out of there!

Down at the end of McCoy at the new river junction?

I would forget Eggleston, without a boat there is not much there.  Several areas in Radford can be fished from the bank.  Take a drive up Hazel Hollow Road, but be careful of private property.

I love the rocks/rapids down right below the junction.  One of my friends caught her PB musky out of there on a chrome rattletrap ripped across the eddies

Thanks for all the input.  With the weather starting to warm up i hope to get out there soon

There is a good discussion on about the best soft plastics for smallies out there.  Might want to steal some ideas from there.  Enjoy the scenery and fishing!
