Anyone Fish Lake Mead, NV?  (I am looking for info)

Featured Replies

I am going to leave cold frozen Idaho in January or February to take a trip to the warmth with a friend who will be 15 minutes away from Overton Beach part of the lake. I am planning on fishing there for a week. Any input or advice would be appreciated. My friend does not fish much, but is looking forward to fishing it too.

Bring some jigs and some finesse baits. There could be a reaction bite at that time of year too. The lake can fish very tough or they could be on the chew this time of year. It is a very windy lake (or can be) so make sure you wear a life vest when you run in the boat. I have seen 8+ foot wind waves there many times.

The water is very clear so light line can be your friend. Points, flats, and grass (if you can find it) will all hold fish. There are smallmouth and largemouth there along with lots of stripers. You should have fun!

Thought I would bump this up.  I am going the first week of March, and hoping to catch some fish.  Anyone with info?

In march hopefully it will be just about spawn time. I never really fished mead too much for bass, only striper. Bass are TOUGH to catch on mead. When I really started getting into bass though (was just recently) I never used the new techniques I learned on mead, had a small lake near my house that was a good learning spot.

Anyways, for mead here is what I know. There isnt much vegetation type cover, so will be pretty hard pressed to find that. Most of the bass are suspended on steap walls with pockets and under ledges. Its a desert lake, so alot of sandstone type ledges and drop offs that come out of the water. I was fishing for striper one day when the FLW tour was there and thats where all the guys were prefishing, rock walls. Also the overton arm is the place to be, thats where most of the bass are. The muddy river empties in there and stains the water some, and I think its a warm river so the bass tend to be better on that arm of the lake. Ive only ever fished the deep arm down by the dam, which might be why I never caught any bass lol. We have snorkeled and seen bass though, and they were doing exactly as I have heard, suspending close to ledges and rock pillars that jut out of the water.

Hope that helps you some! There is a few good bass clubs down there too, one of them is based out of the overton arm. I found their site using google, and they had an email listed as bfb1970@yahoo.com so could try emailing them and see if they can give you any spots. Theres also a bass pro shops in Vegas, at the silverton casino. Talk to Stan, he is plowing around the fishing section in a motorized chair most of the time hehe. He knows his stuff and always helped me out with discounts and recomendations, I know he fishes mead too. Sold me an BPS performance graphite IM8 med/hvy baitcaster for a penny because I wanted to try baitcasting out lol.

Thanks for the info, that does help.  I was looking at google earth and thought that the overton arm would be where I would fish.  I am staying with a friend 15 min from the overton beach marina.  He says the water is rising, and some boats are using that ramp now.  I hope I will be able to use for boat.
