Hawaii Trip!! - Any Advice?

Featured Replies

My family and I have a trip to Oahu set for the 3rd week in May. We have already booked a trip on Lake Wilson with the hawaiibassfishing.com folks. I can't wait to hook into a beautiful peacock bass!

I would also like to try some nearshore salt water fishing. I'm not really interested in trolling for tuna or marlin, that doesn't sound like fishing to me. But fishing for barracuda or tripletail sounds like fun.

Does anybody have any experiences or advice they could share? Also, can anyone recommend a service? I, of course, could use google and just pick one, but I'd prefer to have one referred to me (or told to avoid certain places as the case may be).

I lived on Oahu for three years and the lake you will be fishing for peacock was only three miles from my house so I know you will have a ball. Don't expect any real big ones though. If you are looking for good saltwater fishing it's not far away. Deep water starts only 1/2 mile from shore and there is some great fishing out there. I used to go down to the strip in Honolulu and get a guide there. But now days you need to book ahead. I went out with almost every one of those guys and they were all good. They were almost always on the fish. But you can't get away from fishing for Tuna, Marlin, Mahi Mahi, and Skipjacks without having a bad time. The guys that do the inshore stuff could be called the trash of charter fishing. So be careful when picking one of them. I can't give you one specific deep water charter service to go out with because they are all great guys. Just get the one that you can afford.

bring a surfboard and surf the south shore. diamond head and ala moana bowl are 2 great breaks. be respectful though. those hawaiians take their waves super serious.

I've heard that lake is a bit polluted, so enjoy catching AND RELEASING those bass (wouldn't want you to get sick).  As for my experiences - put on 45+ SPF before you step outside and reapply often, I don't care who you are.  I usually don't even tan if I put 8 on, and I fried with 30 spf there!  Put the 55 on last time I was there and was fine.

As for other entertainment: you might want to hit Germaine's luau - try the poi!  ;)  The Ala Moana shopping center will keep the wife happy - you could spend all day there.  And a visit to the Polynesian center is not bad.  An absolute MUST in my book is Pearl Harbor.  You really have to take the boat ride over and experience the memorial first hand.  Words cannot describe it.

I have a suggestion for you Glenn, HAVE A GREAT TIME AND RELAX, get yourself some of those drinks with the umbrella in them and dance with as many Hula girls as you can!!! Have fun. :)

i caught a 40lb tuna in hawaii when i was 11. after fighting it i feel asleep on the boat for a couple hours until my dad got a marlin!

Make sure to wear DARK sunglasses... 8-)...wouldn't want the wifey to catch checken out the hulla skirts...lol ;D ;D

go tanning!!! its no fun gettin burt down there man!!!!!! i Know ista kinda girly but its worth it!!!

Here in Texas, we call that fishing without a shirt.

Glenn, that why I chose Oahu over the other islands. I have spent the last several years in an intense study of WWII (when I'm not fishin). I hold that generation of Americans in awe for what they accomplished.

Thanks for the advice!
