Many people do not know that you can turn a laptop into a very good GPS unit.

Great point Burley.

Me on the other hand,....ain't so thrilled.  As of last Monday, the computer board you see the UPS man carrying (DIAD IV) does WAAAAY too much now.

I won't go into detail and bore you all but it's all based around tying GPS to every keystroke entered into that stupid thing.  Now my supervisor can be 10 towns away and pull up my truck # in his palm pilot and see

a. Exactly where I am on a map overlay, can even tell if I am moving

B. How many stops are in my board, how many done, how many left, right down to the # of packages at each stop.

That could be a good thing if used properly. I've heard entirely too many stories about phantom UPS (and FedEx) deliveries, boxes delivered to wrong addresses, etc.

If the routes are saved, then either UPS or the package recipient could have some recourse if Mr. UPSman delivers to the wrong address or says that he attempted delivery at X:XX time of day and recipient was there all along.

My main complaint with all shipping services (USPS, UPS, FedEx) is that they never bother to knock anymore. They just toss the stuff on the porch and drive away. Almost like they don't want to see my ugly ***.

Hey Deb, what's your CB handle, "Best Woman Basser"? ;)

hehehee ........sounds good but no, I don't usually talk on the thing.....guess I need to come up with some kind of handle though....

Unfortunately, the trip got cut short, at least for me. Got a frantic call from my Dad.......problem with 7 of his meds....he's changing pharmacies and nothing was right. Soooo, I got to come home and take care of that. Thank goodness we were not too far out, about 60 miles or so......Then shortly thereafter I had to go rescue a friend who was broken down several miles from home and needed help......I (my truck) went and pulled his boat in for him and the tow truck took his vehicle..

So all worked out well........I don't have to spend the next several days dreamin of the lake. ;) Went out for about an hour and a half and caught 5........now that's worth comin home for ::)

Just get off the lake?  How many fish did you catch?  Hear the fishing was good this afternoon and this night.   Soooooooooo nice of you to rescue a fellow BR.

Unfortunately I haven't been close to the lake today :(.  Joe and I went out for a little while yesterday evening.  It is kinda cool that we get to make several quick trips out.  With his semi route, he's actually home a lot.  We should get to spend the next 3 days on the lake so maybe we can find some......

I've had my hands full with my dad today....and part of yesterday.  Since my Mom died, he depends on me for almost everything.

Burley, Although your reasoning is more than believable......;):P...... that policy has changed through the years. Now it is more of the drivers discretion after p/o ing too many moms with napping kids and disturbing too many dogs with attitudes who are now surprised awake by a stranger on their turf, etc. Now we aim more at making sure it is in your travel route. At the side door that is used for walking to the car as opposed to the front door, etc. A note on the door oe where previous packages have been left, when something is expected, will do the trick. Communicate with your driver.

The problem is that they would never even see the note.

I don't mind them leaving it on the porch as no one is going to bother anything there.  My problem is that I often never know when an item is delivered.  It will just magically appear.

I've had a couple of items that were 'signature required' that were left without a signature.

But as I said, it is more of a gripe about all shipping companies, not just UPS.  Hell, I had my mail held last week while I was at the beach.  Carrier delivered a week's worth of mail on Monday.  Instead of leaving it on the porch, they managed to cram all that mail, plus two small boxes (reel and medicine) into my standard sized mailbox.  I almost had to cut the box open to get the reel out.

I wanna turn my laptop into a gps.  do I have to buy something?

I don't have a semi but will it work in a pick up?

  • Super User

While there are GPS programs you can buy I use rarely use them opting for Google Earth which is free and I don't need to know longitude or latitude any way.

Google Earth combines the power of Google Search with satellite imagery, maps, terrain and 3D buildings to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips.

Fly to your house. Just type in an address, press Search, and you'll zoom right in.

Search for schools, parks, restaurants, and hotels. Get driving directions.

Tilt and rotate the view to see 3D terrain and buildings, or look up to explore the sky

Save and share your searches and favorites.
