I HATE Thieves!

Featured Replies

I hate to say it, but I had $1500 worth of my fishing gear stolen from my boat sometime on the night of  Saturday, Sept. 22nd or early morning of the 23rd.  The thief or thieves made of with a BPS Pro Qualifier rod 7' & Pro Qualifier Spinning reel combo, a BPS Bionic Blade Spinning rod with a Pro Qualifier reel, a Plano 737 tackle box with $500 worth of tackle, and my Black & Blue Quantum worm back that had close to 50 bags of various plastics in it last time I counted.

Insurance only covers $750 of it after the $250 deductible, so I'm out the rest.   :'(

The nerve of some people!  The boat was parked underneath my backyard utility light in the back drive, so they had to go around my house, and get into my boat to get the stuff out.

I'm wondering if it's someone I know since my stuff wasn't in plane sight, and I had a brand new Minn Kota Powerdrive V2 mounted to the bow that they didn't touch.  They had to go up to my boat, and look in to see what was in there.  That was when they decided to take what was mine!   >:(

The police are 'actively pursuing any leads' as if that makes me feel any better.   ::)

Anybody you know that fish?Sounds like kids since all they took were reels, rods and tackle.I'd be suspicious of anybody you talked to about fishing around your house.

Sorry to hear man.

That stinks.  Sorry to hear about the lost stuff.  Hope they can figure something out for you.

It sucks that someome stole your stuff.

With all due respect, if you didn't want the police involved, why call them?

It's better then having them say "Sir your out of luck, there's no way we will ever find out who stole your stuff".

Hope a "lead" is found for you......

Sorry to hear about your loss.

It is like being invaded when others enter your domain and take your possessions.

A few suggestions:

1. Do not set up a booby-trap with a claymore mine to knock them out in the future even though you would love to do this.  It is illegal and you will be in more trouble than the undertaker discussing hair styles with the perks' suvivors.

2.  Check with your boat insurance company and find out if it is possible to increase the Equiometn and Accessories limit to a higher amount.  I increased my limit to $3,500 to cover the electronics and fishing tackle on the boat.

3.  Consider investing in those lock bars to cover the compartments.

4.  Lock your compartment covers.

5.  Or, you can practice some risk management and store all of your tackle and baits in the house and put them on the boat when you leave home in the AM.  It does take some time and it is a pain but you will avoid the pure loss exposure.

6.  Remember, a thief's enemies are sound, light and time.  Sound from any type of alarm you place in the boat; light from a flood light; and the time it takes to steal the items. I am planning to purchase one of those motel door alarms that sound off when they are moved.  Just place it inside a compartment or on top of the compartment and if it moves it will sound the alarm.

Actually, after rereading all of the above I vote for the claymore mine option. :D

I doubt the local law enforcement will be successful in retrieving your lost items.  They have more important issues to address and only if they "stumble" onto your stuff will you hear from them.

Anyone could have seen your boat coming or going or noticed it in your back yard when they were working in the area. I doubt the true fishermen would have done such a thing and I would think the crime would have been committed by adults since most teenagers have no use for fishing.

By now the equipment is probably all over the place with the perks giving it away to their friends.

Sad situation to say the least.

It almost had to be done by an adult.

I am 6'2" @ 270 lbs., and I had trouble carrying all that gear at once just because of the awkwardness of it.  I couldn't imagine someone smaller, lighter, and having shorter arms than me trying to walk away with it.

I seriously doubt I will ever recover it.  We had a bank robbery last week as well, and I think most of the attention is focused on that.  The word is out to all of the local 2nd hand sporting goods shops in the Tri-State area.   ;)  Also, the Pawn Shops have to report daily sales to the Police, so they check pawn tickets daily.

Hopefully my obsession with finding it will bring about something.

You might want to check with your home insurance, sometimes that might be covered because it was on your property.  Not always, but usually if your car gets broken into the home insurance will cover it too because it is in the driveway.  And if yours does cover it they should be able to repalce all $1500 worth.

I always take my tackle and rods out and put them in the shed when I get home.  If you don't have a lock on the carpartments I would get some.

That really sucks!!

A few years ago I had a 25 HP Evinrude stolen right off my old boat.

It's a pain, but after every outing I bring all my tackle bags and rods in the house.

Hope they can get your stuff back

Well .... here's the update.

The insurance company a.k.a. Progressive Insurance Co. DENIED the claim!

They stated the boat wasn't in a 'proper storage facility' at the time of the theft, and evidently my fenced in back yard doesn't count!

They said it had to be in an enclosed storage facility like a garage for them to cover the claim.  Needless to say I am cancelling my policy with them as we speak, and going with Kentucky Farm Bureau.

I had a major theft a few years back... it was covered under my homeowner's policy, not the boat insurance (which also covers contents but like you, not enough)  There was no requirement for a "secure" facility.

Call your homeowner's (or renter's) insurance agent and see if they can cover it.

good luck.

Never, ever, ever leave your tackle or your electronics in your boat. You might as well hang out a sign the reads "Please steal from this boat." I don't care what size town you live in. If it can be stolen, it probably will be stolen by some punk kid trying to get his kicks or his next "fix."

I talked to my Home Owner's Agent, and they are going to cover it.   :)

I also picked up some of these to rig up to my boat when I'm not around.  http://safetyandsecuritycenter.com/strobmotalwi.html

I've got the perfect place to put them so that they will cover my back deck which is the point of entry.  :)    I tested one today, and they are loud as all get out.  This thing is as loud as a  'Screamin' Meany'.

Glad to hear it!

Lucky,

Read the exclusions in the policy and decide if this is the case.

Sometimes the lower level claims people will tell you stuff that may not be correct.

If this is the case, you purchased coverage that was not proper cosidering your situation.

READ YOUR POLICY'S EXCLUSIONS AND LIMITATIONS - both the Progressive and Kentucky Farm Bureau's contracts.

It is not a hard document to read.  If you have questions or concerns then ask your agent or another insruance agent to get their input and advice.

And double check any homeowners contract you may have either as a homeowner or a renter for personal property coverage.

Man, I hate when this happens to anyone.
