Kelly Jordan's spoon on UMF?

Featured Replies

Anyone remember the episode of Ultimate Match Fishing when KJ whaced 'em with a spoon?

Anyone remember or know what type of spoon he was using?

If not, I'm looking for suggestions on a brand of spoon that will work for fishing structure in summer, mainly casting it out and ripping it off the bottom then allowing it to flutter down.

A recent episode of Bass Pros had one of their guys doing exactly what you are intending to do.  He was throwing a Hopkins Spoon.

Top secret info. If he tells us then he'll have to kill us.

I used one last May when fishing with a guide at Fork and did quite well with it. I am going to pick up some in a couple of weeks when I am fishing at Fork. I make a similar one using a Dardevle chrome spoon in the 1 oz. size. I remove the hook and split ring and replace it with a #4 Owner dressed treble in white with a size 4 split ring. Then I add a size 4 split ring to the line tie. For color, I use the WTP inc. decorator tape which is kind of reflective with the machining look. On the convex side, I add a 1/4" strip of blue on one edge and a 1/4" strip of chart or green next to it. Then I add a 2" X 1" patch of gold in the center of the concave side.

If no local tackle shops have the plain chrome in stock, I just buy a painted one and use the same tape colors plus I add chrome tape to cover the rest of the painted surface. Most of the painted ones are brass so I don't add the gold to the concave side.

The spoon is the flutter style not the compact type like Hopkins.

It is the 'Big Joe Flutter Spoon' by Joe Spaits.  I believe Kelly helped design it.  The only place I know where to get them is on Lake Fork where Kelly Jordan is a guide (or was a guide).  You can order them from Lake Fork Marina.  Just ask for Cameron...he'll take care of you.

Here is a video of the Joe's Flutter Spoon....check out that roll on the way down!

The spoon in the video is chrome with a patch of gold tape on the convex size. That is the cheap version. The ones the guide and I were using were air brushed painted with sparkles added.

I'll be staying at Lake Fork Marina.

Much thanks to everyone.

I'm gonna give Lake Fork a call and order some.

The Lake Fork Tackle Spoon is identical to the Joe Spaits spoon; Kelly Jordan is on LFT's pro-staff, and they basically copied it.  I'm speaking of the shape and thickness of the spoon, not any of the doctoring like paint or prism tape.  You can get the Spaits Spoon with prism tape or paint; one is not cheaper than the other, they just produce different effects.  Color provides, well...color.  Prism tape provides color and flash.  In the Ultimate Match Fishing episode, Kelly was using a plain chrome spoon....no tape or paint.  He caught over 25lbs in 6min...no exaggeration.   Boyd Duckett said he had never seen anything like it.

I didn't not want to share with everyone I just wanted to have my facts straight first.  The_Natural is right on with the spoons.  I have four in 2 different sizes.  They are a little expensive I believe there around $8.00 each.  I have not really fished them much yet so I can't give a judgment.  They do have the strips of tape that gives them there look.
