need input from veterans-nam especially

Featured Replies

I am building a vid for the NEPVA (paralyzed vets) and I wanted to use the song by Creedance Clearwater revival,.."Fortunate son"

(lyrics--"it ain't meeee,...it ain't meeee,..I ain't no senators son..no,no,no...")

Is this song, in any way, offensive to vets?

I just want to make sure before I post it on the web

Thanks

I'm veteran just not of the Nam era.  I'm Kinda on the Fence post about this song.

This part of the songs is the reason.

"It aint me, it aint me, I aint no military son, son."

"It aint me, it aint me; I aint no fortunate one, one."

I joined the military back in 84 and i got out in 2001 February.   Last week I got a call asking me to come back in.

Hey Russ,

This is coming from a huge CCR fan. "Fortunate Son" is a 60s protest song, but it's more about protesting the government and politics than the war. John Fogarty (CCR's front man) did a tribute concert (with others) on TV to Vietnam Veterans back on July 4, 1987. The sound was simulcast on local FM radio stations so you could crank up the stereo and here the music the way it was meant to be. Which I did! he-he. It was amazing! Let me tell you there were lots of disabled Vietnam vets jumping out of their wheel chairs when he sang that song. I think you are on pretty stable ground. JMHO

I sent 7 emails today to various Vietnam Veteran groups, I got 5 replies.  All 5 explained in different ways, the history behind the song.

In the end, all 5 gave the thumbs up.

That, combined with the replies and PM's I have recieved, have me convinced it's ok.  Thank God,...that would have been like 2 days down the tubes. (for what SHOULD take 4-5 hrs,....I HATE WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER!!!

The video is posted in HERE, enjoy

I remember that song very well. It fits the period and the feelings of the nation at the time. I'm fortunate because I am still alive while there are many that are not. I have mixed emotions pro and con for many reasons that have nothing to do with your video but all to do with my history having served under both honorable and dishonorable commanders. I have seen government corruption at its worst as well as men sworn to protect the rights of soldiers do the exact opposite. So in the end my loyalty is to my fellow soldiers that wear the uniform and not to the politicians or even the upper ranks or  generals if they have forgotten the moral code of humanity and honor.

Use the song.

I am not a veteran but I have nothing but the utmost admiration for all who serve.  I must say I am surprised by the thumbs up.  I always assumed that veterans were the ultimate patriots in both deed and thought.  Fortunate Son is a great song, but it is certainly anti - establishment which, depending on one's definition of patriotic, can certainly be construed to be anti - American.  You learn something new everyday.  In any case, thank you to all who have served our country.

IMHO being anti-establishment does not make you anymore unpatriotic than being pro-establishment makes you patriotic. You can have differing views on a subject and still care about the subject the same. Like the bumper sticker from that same time period "America, Love It or Leave It". You do not leave or desert something or someone you love. If you don't agree with the direction that something or someone is taking, you work to try and change the direction...

BTW Just personal views of a  Veteran

Not my intent to start something or get on a soapbox. Apologize if I did ;)...
