can someone tell me what kind of nails to buy at the hardware store to use.   description would be good.  i hear a nail comes in like 8 penny and such, but have no idea which to buy.  i probably need to cut it to about 3/4 inch.

I can tell you the ones that I use. I use up around a pound of them each year. A size 3d steel finishing nail-Bright Finish. It is about 1 1/4" in length. The brand is Grip Rite and I get them at Lowes.

I purchase a box of Tic Tac candy, throw away the candy and use the little box to carry as many nails as I can stuff in it. I refill it as necessary. I even carry an extra one, just in case.

I also use the candy box to carry my Lunker City lead nails.

thanks wayne.  about how much would it weigh?  again i am fishing a mountain lake with steep bluffs, but a few shallower flats.

Never weighed one, they are lighter than the 3/64 oz lead nails. I use the finishing nails for depths down to about 10'-15' and deeper if it is not windy on in current. I am a patient person with the fall rate because I know it is productive. My primary weight is a flororcarbon leader of around 4' in 20# since I use braided line for wacky rigging.

Paneling nails, they have the same little ridges down the whole length like the more expensive lead nails; these ridges hold the nails in place.

Catt, that is a good suggestion for a lighter weight nail. I have never lost a finishing nail by it slipping out of the worm though.

Any type nail can be used; buy a small pack of each & keep a dozen or so in a small box ready for use.

I understand a little about whacky style, but you guys have me on the nail.  I'm more into cranks and spinners, but am trying to get myself more educated with worms and such.

I use small finish nails to add a little weight to a bait.  I have a couple of different sizes but I do not know how much they actually weigh.  I used to use the lead nails but Vermont has banned lead so finish nails are the way to go.

Wacky rig a trick worm and stick a nail in one end to get a little different fall than a weightless worm.

Texas rig a fluke and stick a nail in the head to get a faster head first sink Stick the nail in the middle of the fluke to get a more horizontal fall.

I am sure you get the idea.  Experiment   :  and see what happens  

You peaked my interest in the actual weight. I reload rifle and pistol ammo so I have a scale that weighs in grains.

The 3/64 oz lead nail weighs 18.4 grains

The size 3d finishing nail weighs 9 grains

A 16 guage 1" paneling nail weighs 7.3 grains
