Hiking Backpack

Featured Replies

Well me and some buddies have a couple hiking trips planned to some fairly remote trout lakes.  While starting my preparation for these trips, I realized I desperately need a good backpack to haul in a float tube, waders, water, food, and a sleeping bag.  This will most likely be two day one night trip, but I'm looking for suggestions on a good bag no more than $150. I've looked at Sierra trading post and found some there, but the problem is I don't know how much space I need.  Will 2500 Cubic inches do?  Or will I need more.  Obviously I will be taking a trip to REI soon to get a feel for the size of these bags, but I'm looking to you guys for some basic recommendations.   My biggest thing is having a main compartment to hold a float tube. At 6'6" 210#'s I'm able to handle a fairly large pack. Any info would be great.  Thanks.

I would be looking more at the 3500-4500cu.in. range. Alot depends on the size of your float tube, sleeping bag, tent? How much food do you think you'll need to take? I would look at www.backcountry.com they have a very good selection with good prices and reviews. If you can make it to REI get the pack on your back and get some weight in it(they should let u do this). See how it feels. If your going any distance with much weight it will pay off BIG to get a pack made to carry your type of load and one that you find comfortable. You will regret it if you skimp on the pack and are hiking 5 miles with an unbalanced load. Think of it like fishing line, your pack is the link between you and all your equipment!! Have fun!! ;D

A couple of suggestions.........make sure you go with an internal frame backpack.  I don't think they make many external frames anymore, but just be sure.  They actually look like a backpack and have no external poles holding them in place.  I would not go anything less than 3500 cu. in.  Try them on if you can and go from there.  Make sure you carry this thing for practice a couple of weeks before you bolt and get some good boots.  They make the world of difference.
