What am I doing wrong?

Featured Replies

I respooled my flippin stick with 50  lb suffix braid for fishing jigs and trailers.

I researched braid on this fourm pretty good and learned lots of tips like using backing  when spooling and not to set the drag too tight to prevent the line cutting into the spool.

At first use I could instantly tell that the braid was much more sensitive and manage to land some nice fish. but the last two trips ive lost some very nice fish.

I feel the bite ,I set the hook  upwards pretty hard the fish comes up and jumps and spits the jig back at me :)

I am thinking my drag may be too loose?

am I just running thru a spell of bad luck or am I doing something wrong?

Keep your rod tip down once you set the hook and keep your line tight to lessen the chance of the bass jumping and throwing the bait.

Is the drag slipping when you set the hook?

Put some Megastrike on your jig.

I probaly does slip when I set the hook and I notice it slipping while fighting the fish before they yak the jig back at me.

I am gonna tighten the drag and see if that works

thanks fot the replys

Tighten that bad boy up!

Seriously I have my drag set pretty tight on my Citica 100dsv and I haven't had any problems yet with Power Pro diggin in. Also haven't had any problems with losing fish once hooked.

Very good advice- keep that fish in the water once you got'em keep constant presure it takes practice but I can tell when that baby is coming up to jump, when that tip is down he will often times still break the surface with a tail slap but most times the fish will remain under water and not get the hangtime it takes to easily spit the hook. As for the braid I have no use for it where I am from- sounds like you are doing well get'em to strike.

With powerful braid it seems to me like very little drag is needed especially with the hook of a flippin jig- others on here are more qualified than I am in this area

Even KVD doesn't stick em all  :)

I hear ya Catt!

my concern comes from getting more bites than before and better quality bites at that, but losing 5 fish in two outings with the jig makes me think I am doing something wrong. I am hoping the tight drag will be the difference.

In my experience the jig has been a pretty high hook up and catch ratio- but yeah everyone will lose some every now and then.

Your questions were  :)

I am thinking my drag may be too loose?

Am I just running thru a spell of bad luck?

I don't think your drag is too loose or you could have landed any fish

I think you're having a little bad luck

I don't think you're doing anything wrong or you wouldn't be getting bite.

Now if you were losing ever fish you stuck then you have a problem but losing a couple every outing aint bad.
