Cash Back Scam - Is this True?

Featured Replies

Received this via e-mail and i have no idea if it is true. Has anyone heard about this type of scam????  :)

The lady writes, "Also, here's another link from a friend regarding another local Wal-Mart happening:"

http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=4829623

"THIS IS TRUE! It happened to me at Wal-Mart (Supercenter Store #1279, 10411 N Freeway 45, Houston , TX 77037 ) a month ago.

I bought a bunch of stuff, over $150, & I glanced at my receipt as the cashier was handing me the bags. I saw a cash-back of $40.

I told her I didn't request a cash back & to delete it. She said I'd have to take the $40 because she couldn't delete it. I told her to call a supervisor. Supervisor came & said I'd have to take it.

I said NO! Taking the $40 would be a cash advance against my Discover & I wasn't paying interest on a cash advance!!!!! If they couldn't delete it then they would have to delete the whole order.

So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order & re-scan everything! The second time I looked at the electronic pad before I signed & a cash-back of $20 popped up.

At that point I told the cashier & she deleted it.

The total came out right. The cashier agreed that the electronic pad must be defective.

Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad was defective because she NEVER offered me the $40 at the beginning.

Can you imagine how many people went through before me & at the end of her shift how much money she pocketed?

Just to alert everyone. My co worker went to another Walmart last week. She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried her along and didn't give her a receipt.

She asked the cashier for a receipt and the cashier was annoyed and gave it to her. My co worker didn't look at her receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked for $20 cash back.

SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK.

My co worker called Walmart who investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money. She then called her niece who works for the bank and her niece told her this.

There is a scam going on. The cashier will ask for cash back and hand it to her friend who is the next person in line.

Please, Please, please check your receipts right away when using debit cards. The store has the cashier under investigation now. We can only pray that she is caught very soon.

I am adding to this. My husband and I were in a WalMart payed our bill with a credit card when my husband went to sign the credit card signer he just happen to notice there was a $20 cash back added.

He told the cashier that he did not ask nor want cash back.

She then said this machine has been messing up and she canceled it. We really didn't think anything of it until we read this email.

Please be aware."

Best Buy is another place to watch your receipts.

One scam is for the cashier to add those magazine subscriptions to your bill whether you want them or not.  They're under pressure to sell a X amount of them each month so some will cave-in and take the dishonest route to fulfill their quota.

Scam 2 usually happens during the holiday post season.  Cashiers will ring up a sale that includes a combination payment of gift card and cash or credit card for the amount the buyer is spending in cash and or credit card alone by punching in a at register discount or they'll delete some items so the amount matches that cash/credit amount.  They void the gift card scan and then pocket the gift card selling it on Ebay later.

I never seen this but will have to look out for it anyway. Boy they will not give out mortgage loans and loans to smal businesses to keep them afloat but they still will rack in the consumers on credit cards. GO FIGURE!

I will watch for this, thanks.  I usually pay cash and I try to keep a rough running total in my head as I'm shopping.  That way, if a total bill is way off from my figures, I check the receipt closely.

I believe it can happen, I just need to go back to using cash again :-/

I used to work in retail, this is just ridiculous.  I had old people in general or people that had glasses that couldn't read the credit card pad, and would get mad at me for charging them more, when they hit the cash back. At K-mart, I cannot control what you punch in on the credit card pad.  At K-mart, if the machine wasn't working right, I had to notified loss and prevention, who then removed the machine off the cash register. And if manager knew it wasn't working, they would have removed it themselves. So how come Wal-Mart managers not removing it? and how is she controlling the pad? There no way any cashier should be allow control those pads... Sorry, there way too many things in this story that are skeptical to me.

I don't think this is true. I've never had a credit card to ask a customer for cash back, it usually only ask with ATM cards. Even at other locations I've been too where I used my parent's credit card it never asked me for cash back...

If customers filed complaint on her 3 times and she worked same register wouldn't wal-mart manager been wise enough to change the credit card pad? There no way any cashier has any control over the credit card pad and what the customer's are punching in. I think wal-mart loss and prevention manager just ought get random person go through line and see what happens. Wal-Mart manager aren't exactly smartest people on block, they are just lucky because their store has such great name, however, when one files a complaint they don't generally do anything. Guarantee this lady will shop there again. ::)

If you are paying by cash you have nothing to worry about. The scam is for "cash back" using a debit card or credit card. They simply won't tell you they are doing it.

This is why you ask for a receipt every time if they don't give you one.I haven't had this problem yet...but i have heard of this happening.Been happening for awhile now, this really isn't new.

Just pay attention to your receipts. If they don't give you one force them to...otherwise they can get into some serious trouble.

I usually have a good idea of what the total of my purchases are and bird dog the receipt when I receive it. Another good habit to get into is to watch the price display when your stuff is being scanned. I've caught several things that were priced one thing and rang up something else (usually more).

I guarantee you if someone at Walmart pilfers cash or Bestbuy cashier put mag subscriptions on my bill, their butt WILL be unemployed that day AND I would press criminal charges.

That's the problem, nobody press charges against them and they try to play it off as it was an accident. It's your word against theirs and you have no proof they didn't do it by accident.Or that maybe it the cash register isn't working properly.

http://www.bbb.org/us/ Call them...

You know, there was a scam that Burger King employees used to do, where if they don't give you a receipt they most likely made transaction non-existence. Every wonder why they had signs saying "Notified Manager if no receipt is giving" I highly doubt they cared about your family's bookkeeping.

A good rule of thumb is that if you got it in an email forward, it isn't true.

Nah, they won't pay for a big diesel truck.

I don't usually look at my receipt after a purchase but now I will.

You don't have to look at your receipt. If you watch the computer screen it will say "cash due" or "tender due" or whatever, if you paid exact amount with credit card or debit card with no cash back, it should come up cash due 0.00.

I wouldn't fret over this, I don't see how this scam can work and I used to work in retail in high school.

http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/scams/cashback.asp

Snopes says it is undetermined but they bring up a good point about the cashiers not being able to request cash back. The request cash back button is on the credit card pad which is controlled by the customer.

I believe it can happen, I just need to go back to using cash again :-/

Only way I buy stuff. like Clark Howard always says, Don't spend more then what you can pay off in under a month...
