thoughts on sure set hooks

Featured Replies

I have a bunch of rapala and storm cranks with the sure set hooks and I am not sure I like them. It seems like they get hung up on the other hooks more often than my other cranks. any thoughts? i would hate to replace them there is nothing worse than making a great cast and having the lure messed up because of the hooks.

I sometimes use one on the rear of some of my topwaters like spooks but other than that I HATE THEM.

A:They snag every friggan piece of weed, leaf, scum, trash, stick,or debris in the lake.A good way to dredge the water and find out whats down there.Try working that through a brush pile LOL.

B:The biggest reason I hate them is because I have mortally wounded a ton of fish with those things. When a fish chokes a crankbait these hooks tend to puncture the inside of the gills and you end up with a bloody mess and a fish that you know will never swim away.Have also gotten several stuck in their throats.A treble in the throat is no laughing matter.

On the other hand I do believe they do their job and catch a lot of the "slappers" who just take a quick swipe at the bait but I would rather use standard trebles then have the inside of the boat look like someone got shot :-/
