I have done some research on Entry Level DSLRs and choose the Pentax K-x after reading multiple positive reviews from various sources.

Can anyone recommend a photography book primarily focused on DSLR features and settings?

There is no better book:

My only other bit of advice is to make your camera choice based on the lenses available, not camera features.

Is the Nikon D90 a good SLR?

I couldn't agree more. Lens selection and resale value are key. Cameras change all the time (almost yearly) while good lenses last for years (20+). Good glass is a must!

I'm a Canon guy, but yes, this camera is great.  Unlike the lower range Nikons, you can pretty much use any AF Nikkor.  The details are on DPR's review: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond90/
