I live in southern KY, had a pretty harsh winter but spring has sprung, may-apples are coming up, and i am ready to get out there and hunt some "dry land fish"

Never had any so no need to look for them now that i'm 23.

How do you guys cook them?

soak them in salt water overnight to get out any bugs, then coat them in ranch dressing, and roll them in cornmeal, then fry them in butter or margarine, oh goodness, i just made myself soooo hungry. ;D

Are they distinguishable from other fungi? I don't feel like poisoning myself. By a little google search apparently we can hunt them in California as well.

They don't normally make it to Michigan until the first week of May or so.  Usually by mothers day they are ready to be picked.   Can't wait.
