Boat Sails Over Bosher's Dam in Richmond

Walking grandog last night at 7:30 PM when I hear sirens and see fire trucks, EMT units, rescue boats and police cars at the end of my road.

So we walk down to the first police unit that his Cherokee Road blocked off and ask what happened.

The officer says, "someone went over the dam."

Sure enough, on the news this morning six people in a speed boat went over the dam, sending one child and one adult to the hospital.

The boat owner said he never saw the dam signs nor the safety buoys in the water.  I see them all the time when I fish that area.

All I can think of is two things. First, they were lucky the river is high and they could clear the dam and then land about three feet into the water, otherwise they would have hit the dam wall and flipped over, falling about 8 to 10 feet into the rocks.

Second, I think of the expressions on their faces when they realized they were airborne and their last words before crashing into the water below.....Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.  ;D   ;D   ;D

P.S. This points out three things for all of us to remember:

1.  Know the waters you boat.

2.  Get a map of the areas you are boating and look at it so you will be somewhat familiar with the area.

3.  Take the safe boating classes and get your safe boating certificate.

They were dam lucky.

Somehow they will hold the boat manufacturer responsible as they did in another post from earlier this month.

As well they should. All boats should have dam avoidance radar.  I really do not see how this type of thing happens. I mean, it is not like hitting a partially submerged log or something, it is a DAM. How do you not see a dam? Was it dark? I hope so. I hate to think someone drove over a dam in broad daylight.
