Funny things you do with your lures

Featured Replies

I ALWAYS have to bite a little bit off the end of my plastics. Especially with jigs, it helps them fit better when you push the plastic to the lead.

Each time I buy a new plastic I have never used before, I pull on it til it breaks.  I just like seeing how far I can push this bait.  I've probably wasted a ton of money doing this.

by far, the stupidest thing i've ever done is grind up french roast coffee beans and put a bunch of plastics into the bag to let them "marinate". i did this after reading the thread on the coffee tubes. ugh...whatta mess...the worms/senkos/grubs turned almost black but, as soon as it hit the water, it all came off. worse, it didn't help my catch ratio at all  >;)

my wife thinks it's humorous that i borrow her nail polish to paint my jig heads and to give some of my cranks that "bleeding bait" appearance. she recently bought me my own bottles of red and black nail polish  ;D

otherwise, i will fish my plastics until they're torn to shreds and won't stay on the hook a second longer.

Every time i get new soft plastics or jigs, i try them out in my roommates fish tank... he gets very irritated when he catches me doing this though  ;D

I wouldn't call this funny, but when one of my sift plastics get messed up a lot, I break them into small 1in pieces and use them to catch Crapie. It works too!

I like to split the flappers on Sweet Beavers, Brush Hogs etc.

I keep a Yo-Zuri Rattlin Vibe on my desk at the office. If someone picks it up, I give them the 'handle with care' disclosure....some of them just don't get it.  One would think that the two shiney treble hooks could be dangerous.....

I modify or as Brian put it "Frankenstein" a lot of my baits.  Just last night I switched hooks on one of my cranks with a Shad Rap I found floating in the lake Saturday night.  Looks funny now with those larger hooks but they sure are sharp.  I also file the bills on some of my cranks and jerkbaits with a Dremel tool.  You get some wicked erratic actions this way.  All of the Devil Horses I own have the stock props removed.  I put larger aluminum props on them like those found on peacock bass lures.  Lots of water disturbance!!  Huge strikes!! ;)

I do this as well as biting down my jig trailers. Especially Yamamoto Flappin hawg 2's, I actually cut them into a V shape so the little balls fit on the jig and go up to the head. Looks really good, and it fits.  ;)

good way to get a side view of the baits...
