upside down carp

Featured Replies

today at the local lake i saw a carp, 3 or 4 times, swimming upside down.  when it noticed me it would roll over and swim off.  why the h*ll was it doing this?

were you doing cartwheels?  :-?

That's strange, I hope someone has a serious answer for this one.

lol, no cartwheels and i wasnt dumping vodka in the water.  It seriously did this two or three times (once it was off in the distance) The first time i saw it I thought it was dead.

"Any disease which affects the nervous system , muscular system or swim bladder can cause abnormal swimming behaviour. Any debilitating disease that causes weakness will also lead to inability to swim properly, and so it isn't surprising that fish which are terminally ill will be seen swimming abnormally - even up-side down."

I had to look it up.  So most likely something was wrong with it, swimbladder or otherwise.  Now the really curious part is, if something was wrong with it, how did it flip over when it saw me... twice.

actually I just thought of this but sometimes in our home lake when they are spawning they are going crazy and flying around everywhere near the bank.  There are times when they get so entangled with each other that they look like they are going sideways and upsidedown.  So that might be it.

i caught 2 carp today and after i release them they lay upside down.  but i give them a push with my pole and they swim off.  and all the carp ive ever caught do that, and some bowfin, and poking them allways gets them to swim off normally.  mabey they got caught and never got poked with a stick?

yeah, thats probobly what happened  :-?

I've seen a lot of carp swimming upside down.  Can't ever figure out why.  Time to google it.

I seen a bluigill swim violently along the surface upside down, and then later I found out it was doing this because it had part of it's tail bit off.

As far as the carp.... maybe it has somthing to do with their spawning rituals?   :-?

I think what you witnessed was a rarely seen phenomenon.  The blue angels carp team.  There aquatic formations are unparralelled!
