trout on spinning gear

Featured Replies

anybody here fish for trout using spinning gear? If you do, what kind of lures do you use, rod/reel you use, and techniques?

I do. I go to Montana for 2-3 weeks each year in early summer. I use a spinning reel with a 7 foot med. light rod and 4 or 6 pound fluro line. I love to use super dupers, and I also use small spoons called cyclones as well as 1.5 and 2 inch grubs.

Hester has it! 7 foot med - light action. I use a 2 to 4 pound test. Buy some lil joe in line spinners.

im using 4lb mono now but would you suggest i use flurocarbon and would that even be any better.

Definitaly use fluoro instead, unless your fishing topwater for some reason. It is much less visible, which is a big plus in the gin clear waters of Montana. It is also more abrasion resistant, and sinks so it gives a lot of lures better action.

If you guys fished where I fish with a 7ft rod you would rip your hair out. I fish with a 5'6 microlight bass pro rod. LOVE it for trout. I use 6lb test I wouldnt go any lighter unless you plan on catching 16" and below. I use a microlight reel usually abu garcia nothing special.

If I am not fly-fishing I am using a spinning reel.  I use a ultra lite reel like a stradic 1000 and an ultra-lite to light action rod, between 5'-6'.  My bait of choice is an inline spinner like a mepps, or panther martin.  Any color will work but I prefer all chrome or firetiger.  Also you can change the treble hook on the back of the spinner to a single hook and add a piece of nightcrawler, sometimes thats the ticket.

6 ft UL pole, with 4 lb flouro.  It works great.  I throw a lot of small crankbaits and minnow plugs.

Fly fishing rules. I saw this dude once catch a 23 pound striper using 3lb test and I didn't know what to make of it.

Where I fish for trout though, flies, terrestrials and inline spinners work the trout out of the water. Terrestrials at night land me alot of browns. I cannot seem to catch a brown during the day. Lots of brookies, lots of rainbows, but where the heck did the browns go?  :-/

thanks everybody for the information but i have some questions. I went fishing yesterday and caught some trout but i keep getting hung up in rocks and had to cut my line alot. I was getting really tired of retying on hooks all the time. I go some spinners caught up and lost 2 panther martins and a rooster tail. What can i do to stop this from happening and make my fishing experience better.

If felt like i was tying more than i was fishing.

when im fishing a creek as soon as u get snagged give it slack immediatly and alot of time it will fall out    if that doesnt work go upstream and try to get the hooks loose

the streams i fish are only about 8 ft across but have some big trout in them so i go with a 5 ft ultralight rod and use a chartruese trout spinner and do well for brownies.

I do a ton of fishing for trout with a spinning setup. I have tons of them, from 5'6" UL up to 7'6" Medium rods...

Most of my rods are about 6' when I'm trolling, and like to move up to 6'6" or 7' when I have to do some casting, cause that extra length helps with casting distance. I like most of my rods to be light or Medium light action. I use some medium action 7' Rods when I'm plunking powerbait on an egg weight setup...

I love trolling and really like using all sorts of spinners, spoons and plugs. I love using F4 Flatfish and trolling them about as slow as I can get away with...Sure catches some nice fish too, not to mention a good quantity. I could go on for a while, so if you have questions, feel free to ask them to me or PM me...
