Pike question

Featured Replies

I was wondering if any of you guys read the article in In Fisherman about a month ago about fishing for pike with a float and jig? Anyone tried this? Or have a comment?

I may give it a shot soon as season opens here.

Wouldn't surprise me to see a pike eat the JIG AND THE FLOAT too. Seems those toothy critters will eat about anything that's in the water. IMO:o)

I agree with Popeye, pike will readily hit any bait in your tackle box, so there's little doubt that it would work if it's fished in the vicinity of pike.

i would think it needs to be a big fly so they can see it. most i catch are on something that is a combination of shinny, loud, and fast.

Pike can be suprisingly fickle, especially here in Colorado where they have tons of food such as abundant perch, crayfish, and stocked trout.

A jig under a float will work, but my favorite early season pike bait (one of the best to throw any time of the year though) is a fluke or sluggo.

my favorite pike (chain pickeral, smaller in florida)bait is a sliver jerk bait, they'll also kill rattle traps and white spinnerbaits, i hate em'

Thanks to all of you.  I was just trying to get a feel if I should invest (time/money) in this tactic or not.

I normally throw fast moving noisy or flashy baits for all my pike fishing too, I was just considering adding something else to the arsenal. The baits I love using are a chartruse and white tandem willow leaf  spinner, a floating wyld shiner in the chrome and black and the storm swim shad.

Man those sluggos are taking a beating I bet never thought of slower soft plastics for pike but if it works nothin to complain about

I once landed a 19 inch pike on 4 lb test using a mini-mite (for crappies) float and no leader - I have no clue how I managed to land this thing.

Float and fly works great for pike, smallies and largies, with appropriate sized jigs.  You can control the depth and location much easier and put it and keep it next to cover.  it works great for those post cold front days when the fish are indifferent.
