Swivels

Featured Replies

When do you use a swivel?

What lures, rigs, or situations would require a swivel.

Thanks for the info

I only use them on a c-rig when bass fishing.

Remember....

Good things about swivels are that they help stop line twist.

Bad things about swivels is that they add to your knots and therefore add to the areas where your line can fail.

I use swivels when I throw baits that twist, like Roostertails, Mepps, swimming worms, grubs and of course, Carolina rigs.

Use a barrel swivel.

You may also want to use black swivels so the fish will not see them easily.

I attach my swivels with Palamor Knots.  This means that I tie the swivel onto my line, then pull off how much leader I want and cut the line. Then tie the swivel with the line attached back to the main line.

By doing this you have a Palamor Knot above and below the swivel.

When Carolina rigging use a glass bead to protect the swivel from your weight.

You also do this if you put a swivel by the top of your hook and use a weight.

If you get a lot of line twist on your spinning reel, you may want to use a swivel to help reduce it even with baits that do not twist.

;)

On C-rigs and lures that can create line twist, ie, inline spinners. Occasionally on a crank or jerkbait that has a split ring on the front.  I do not like tying line to a split ring because it can work through the ring and come off.

I use swivels mainly because of the ease of switching lures

I tried the Quickswirl, and folks here pounded me, but it works awesome for changing cranks and topwater plugs, and I have been catching them non-stop, so the actions, as far as I can see, is not diminished. There's no line twist that I have found, since it has a bearing attached to the connector.

Just another alternative to swivels-

Hey Moby, ya tried the oval split rings? They seem to solve the problem of coming off.

I only use them on C-rigs as well. When I was a kid I used them for everything until I decided to stick with tieing knots. I don't like using swivels for the simple reasom that it is so easy to switch out lure that way however if you do not pay enough attention your knot will easily become more and more weak. ;)

Very true... I always check on that and retie the swivel on frequently. I've also bent swivels easily on hooksets and occasionally broken one or two. I use the fast snaps on crankbaits, as they are much more durable...
