HOOKS checkem out

Featured Replies

Are todays chemicaly sharpened stock hooks on my less expensive crankbaits good enough (i.e. bandit, strike king, norman)or should i change them all?

The only hooks I change are rat-l-traps. The others I change after one season's use.

Most of the hooks on today's cranks are better quality than they were a few years ago.  I noticed on a lot of my Normans, having black nickel hooks found on higher end cranks.  I still don't care for the bronze colored Gammys found on a few of the cranks but they do stay sharp for a while. Even some of my Zoom cranks come with the bronze colored hooks.  Most have the black nickel though. I wouldn't go changing all my hooks unless it became a problem on a regular basis holding fish on a crank.

i usually fish with stock hooks until they get dull or rust out.. i know it is good practice to replace hooks but i cant afford to buy hooks for the millions of lures i have ;D.. some lures already come with the highest quality already so i wouldnt worry about it to much...

The Norman baits that come in the red packages come factory with Gama's on them.

ditto on the ratltraps.  Change em out. RIGHT NOW!!

My lipped cranks are mostly bagley's and LC's and wiggle warts.  No hook problems there.

Get a hook sharpener and keep them sharp.  It takes 10 seconds to sharpen your hooks and it makes a big difference.  You know if they are sharp if you slide them acros your thumbnail and they stick.

Be weary of any really cheap lures.  You can inspect the hooks and if they seem brittle or like they will bend, replace them.

Daiwa lures generally have very weak hooks.  I bought a bunch of Shad Masters last week, and changed em out.  Some of their lures come with the vanadium/nickel hooks, but most come with what is only a little stronger than tin foil...

kb  seem to me the size of the hooks are not the same as you can buy   like a #6 treble hook you buy dont match up with what comes on lure   the look like a # 5 size but i dont think they make  those sizes  a #4  is a #3.   if you have a lure that has a hook  that i would call a #5   and put on any brand of hook that would be a #6  the two hook would lock each other   am i wrong  kb????? :-/

X a million i found that the bronze gammies were shar0p so were vmc, but owner made the best trebles.
