Freshwater striper

Featured Replies

I have seen pictures of people catching bass and striper on the same lake, i figure theres a spit going out to the ocean?. Now i'm no genius or tournament fisher, but i thought i had my fish down. Atleast up until now. I mean, this is really screwing with me. I have always thought they were saltwater and its not like i have never fished for them. It feels like i have been cheated on.

We all know stripers, but freshwater? Whats the deal?

I believe Striper are a ocean fish that will swim into freshwater rivers.  I believe any landlocked stripers were stocked in lakes and able to survive.  They aren't a natural occurence.  If you're in Mass I knwo the Stripers run every spring following shad and herring into the rivers.  Unfortunately, I heard the striper run in the Charles this spring was the worst in years.  I'm not sure of any freshwater lakes in Mass with Stripers, but belive you can get them in the Spring  close to the ocean in the major rivers.

CR is right. They stock stipers in lakes around here to control the gizzard shad population. Landlocked stripers won't reproduce, but they get to a good size and don't seem to hurt the LMB population.

well stripers origanated in the ocean but can be in fresh water same thing with reds, but most lakes dont have much baitfish so that is why
