Tennessee trout fishing laws

Featured Replies

I guess im putting this in the right section of the forums. But I had a question for anyone that lives or is familiar with the laws of tennessee trout fishing. I read on a website the following:

"Prohibited baits include, but are not limited to, minnows (live or otherwise preserved), worms, corn, cheese, bread, salmon eggs, pork rinds, Power Bait, liquid scents and natural baits found along streams."

Is this true for the state of Tennessee or the particular area that the website is talking about? I couldn't find anything else about this but i dont wanna get down there and get in trouble for fishing with illegal lures or baits. Thanks.

That's probably for waters inside Great Smoky Mountains Nat'l Park.  i'm not aware of restrictions like that statewide.

While it's true that some very defined areas are limited to artificial bait, most streams and rivers in Tennessee are open to fishing with most or all of the baits you mentioned.  Even in the Smokies, you'll find places where you can use most anything.

Start here to check more. If you know exactly where you're heading, I'd call the TWRA to make sure, in case you're making a long trip in.

Yea read the regs very carefully, and talk to someone in that region to make sure you get the right info. Someone in Jackson or Nashville's office will probably not know the regs, I've had it happen to me before. I believe alot of the trout waters in east Tn have a one hook restriction as well, so just call and check and tell them what waters you will be fishing to get the most accurate info.
