Live Bream for catfish bait in Alabama?

Featured Replies

I've combed through the AL fishing regulations, and I didn't see anything that said I couldn't use live bream for catfish bait.  Is that correct in AL?  My 7 year old son and I have a cub scout overnighter at Lake Guntersville State park, and then a fishing rodeo the next day.  I'd love for him to catch a big catfish and win the rodeo.  He usually just catchess bream with a worm, so I thought I'd put the bream to good use.

I found this in the Alabama regulations:

Use of Minnows for Bait in State-Owned Public Fishing Lakes

Regulated - Live minnows used for bait in any state public fishing

lake shall be limited to the following species: Goldfish minnows,

commonly called "Indiana" minnows; golden shiners, commonly

called "Shiners," and fathead minnows, commonly called "Toughies."

You may want to call you local DNR.

If bream are not game fish in your state then you are good to go, most states have minnow regs because sometimes people will use juvenile carp of several different species because they resemble minnows when small enough. They don't want that going on.

uh oh i hope that thats not a regulation in georgia cause we used alot of live bream on lakeblackshear down here http://www.bassresource.com/fishing-forum/Templates/Forum/default/undecided.gif

We are safe in Georgia,  I use big/large Bream for flatheads on the Flint.

HOOK AND LINE

There is no restriction on the number of poles and lines to fish for game fish except: fishing for trout - one pole; fishing on Public Fishing Areas - two poles; and sport shad fishing - two poles.

Anglers using more than two poles and lines to fish for shad must abide by commercial shad regulations.

Landing nets may be used to land fish legally caught.

Game fish may be used as live bait (where live bait is legal) if they are taken legally and you do not exceed daily creel and possession limits.

For Alabama...

http://www.outdooralabama.com/fishing/freshwater/fish/bream/90.cfm

"220-2-.90 Use of Game Fish for Bait - Use of Sunfish (Bream).

It shall be lawful to use the following species of the sunfish family for bait in the streams and waters of Alabama: bluegill, redear sunfish (shellcracker), green sunfish, and/or any other species of bream; provided, that nothing in this section shall be so construed as to allow any person to have in his possession any sunfish or bream in excess of the daily creel limit, regardless of size. (Acts 1953, No. 644, p. 903; Acts 1967, No. 572, p. 1327.)"
